64 - Newcomerstown Defeats Port Washington 67-52 (1-28-64)

PORT WASHINGTON - A cold 3rd quarter spelled defeat for Port Washington High (3-10) Tuesday night as Newcomerstown (6-6) won. The Purple Riders of Coach Don Durham led 14-10 at the 1st stop and held a 31-30 margin at the half. But, they got only 8 points in the 3rd frame, while the John Haugh-coached Trojans were getting 19. Thus, going into the final frame Newcomerstown was in front 49-39. The 2nd half was sparked by the play of Dave Williams, John Hurst and Paul Grimm as Newcomerstown outscored Port 37 to 21 after intermission. Hurst paced Newcomerstown's balanced attack, which showed five in double figures, canning 17. Williams added 14 and Grimm had 13. Ken Gay led Port with 17 markers and Jim Bates netted 12. Newcomerstown dropped 29 of 56 from the field for 43 percent, while Port made 19 of 39 for 49 percent. The Port Washington Reserves (5-7) started the night off by outclassing the Newcomerstown Reserves 46-31.
