64 - Midvale Jolts Unbeaten Lakeland 85-74 (1-18-64)
MIDVALE - A "night off" Friday proved worthwhile for the Pete Hilliard-coached Midvale Blue Devils (11-3) here Saturday night as they rose up to rock unbeaten Lakeland of Harrison County (12-0) 85-74. The Red Raiders, going into the fracas ranked 12th among Ohio's Class A schools, found out what other Blue Devils' foes have--it's hard to stop Dean DeMattio and sidekick Dan Kohler. DeMattio, Tuscarawas County's most valuable player a year ago, burned the nets for 36 points to hike his total to 362--an average of 25.1 per contest. Kohler was in his familiar role as backup man as he got 25. Midvale made the most of a hot beginning as it sank 12 of 13 action shots in the 1st quarter and led 28-15, 50-42 and 68-57 at the stops. The Blue Devils continued their fine work in the shooting department and ended with 35 of 72 action attempts for a fine 49 percent and 15 of 21 charities. Lakeland drilled in 28 of 61 for 45 percent and 18 of 26 respectively. DeMattio also proved to be a stalwart under the boards as he hauled in 17 rebounds. Husky Don Ickes grabbed 14. All told, Midvale had 47 and Lakeland 29. Midvale's man-to-man defense kept the hot-shooting Red Raiders bottled up most of the night. The Midvale Reserves (7-4) scorced the Lakeland Reserves 61-35.
