DOVER - Two teams faced with huge rebuilding jobs will open the 1963-64 basketball season for Tuscarawas County Friday.  Slated to meet about 8PM are Port Washington (0-0) and Stone Creek (0-0).  The site is the home of the Panthers.  Port, under Coach Don Durham (3), will be hard-pressed to improve on last year's showing when it won 11 and lost 10 for the best mark at the school in 6 years.  Durham has just one veteran to build an attack around--Senior Ken Gay.  Durham is in his third year as head Purple Rider.  Stone Creek, likewise, is expected to have its troubles as 1st year man Charles Huggins (1) greeted just one veteran when drills opened--Senior Verle (Curly) Endlich.  Lost via graduation at Port were the team's top scorer, Larry Laisure, who  had 246 points a year ago, Paul Schwab (206), Roger Beighley (105), Wayne Blind (155) and Tom Loader (203).  Stone Creek  is without Jim Billman (216), Cliff Endlich (209) and Ed Wallace (186) among others.  Verle Endlich scored 156 points a year ago.  He stands 6-2 and will play center.  The Panthers were 5-16.  Gay put 189 points through the hoops last season for Port.  Expected to start along with Gay, a guard, Friday are 6-3 Senior Jim Bates (center), 5-10 Senior Steve Bender (forward), 6-0 Junior Bob Casteel (forward) and either 5-8 Sophomore Roger Lewis (guard) or 5-11 Junior Leonard Cameron (guard).  John Foust 6-0 (center) will also see duty.  "Lack of experience will be our main problem," Durham said, "plus the fact that the remaining county teams are exceptionally strong.  But we're going to do our best and may pull a few surprises."  Huggins will use this lineup:  Endlich at center, 5-8 Junior John Flinner and 5-8 Senior Gail  Mizer at guards, 5-9 Junior Victor Turner and 6-1 Senior Dick  McPherson at forwards,  with 5-9 Junior Jim Wherley seeing duty at both guard and forward.  Others on the varsity are 5-10 Sophomore Gara Mizer (forward), 6-3 Freshman John Biharl (center), 6-0 Junior John Feller (forward-center) and 5-7 Junior Tom  Burrier (guard).  "We're not expecting great things with such a rebuiding program," Huggins said, "But we hope to improve."  According to records, Stone Creek has not beaten Port Washington since 1958-59 when the Panthers took 43-42 and 62-50 decisions.  Since that year the Purple Riders have captured 8 straight, including 57-47 and 53-47 nods last year.
