NEWCOMERSTOWN - A tremendous effort by 6-4 Junior Dick Simpson enabled Newcomerstown High (2-0) to win its 2nd basketball game of the season here Tuesday night, a hard-earned decision over a battling Port Washington (1-3) combine.  The final score belies the closeness of the battle, as the 2 teams went into the final frame deadlocked 40-40.  Port Washington actually led 15-10 at the 1st stop and trailed only 27-25 at intermission.  Turnovers played a big part in the final period as the Purple Riders couldn't cope with the Trojans' pressing defense.  But Simpson, in his 1st year of cage competition, took over and scorched the nets for 19 points to give the John Haugh-coached Trojans the win.  Simpson ended the night with 36, the highest output at Newcomerstown in some time.  Simpson got help from Keith Stoffer who got 14 and Dave Williams with 12.  Bob Casteel paced the Don Durham-coached Purple Riders with 15 markers.  Ken Gay popped in 14 and Leonard Cameron 11.  The Trojans controlled the boards most of the time, with Stoffer pulling in 22 rebounds and Simpson 19.  Both squads performed well at the bonus stripe with Port hitting 72 percent on 18 of 25 tosses and Newcomerstown 60 percent on 10 of 17.  The Trojans late scoring punch was evident in their field goal percentage; however, as they made 49 percent of their shots from the floor in the 2nd half as compared to only 32 percent in the first.  "The team worked pretty well together," an elated Haugh said.  "It's coming along.  I was really pleased with the poise after we got behind in the 1st quarter.  The boys never quit and really put up a fight in the final quarter."  The Newcomerstown Reserves started the sweep of Port by dropping the Port Washington Reserves (1-2) 44-35.
