64 - Queen's Kiss Spirits Port Washington to 65-39 Win Over Malvern (11-30-63)

PORT WASHINGTON - Don't be alarmed if you see Miss Sheila Miller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Karl Miller of RD 1, Port Washington, who was crowned basketball queen by last year's ruler, Kathy Thomas, give players on the Purple Rider team a light "peck" on the cheek before each game. The formula worked just fine Saturday night as the Riders chalked up their 1st victory of the season by a 26-point count over visiting Malvern. You see, Miss Miller, after being crowned Port's 1963-64 cage queen, gave the team's only veteran Ken Gay a small kiss and the 5-10 Senior responded auspiciously as he went out and hit 32 points to pace the victory. It was Gay's career high in three years of varsity action. The Riders had little trouble with the Green Hornets after the 1st quarter ended in their favor 10-6. They waxed hot in the 2nd for 23 points and a 33-12 halftime lead. Gay sparking the uprising with 16 points. The Don Durham-coached Purple Riders, who dropped 2 previous outings, also credited an improved defense in turning the tide in favor of the Riders. Port Washington sank 20 of 51 action shots for a respectable 39 percent and made 25 of 33 free tosses. Hot-shooting Ken Gay took scoring honors to lead the win, burning the cords for 32 points. He was the only Purple Rider in double figures, but the rest of the team had good balance. Tom Orcutt paced the Green Hornets with 15 markers, while C.L. Andrews chimed in with 14 and also controlled the boards in a great one-man show of power around the nets. Jim Bates led the hosts with 10 rebounds. The Port Washington Reserves (1-1) had started the sweep of the Malvern Reserves by dropping them 36-24.
