64 - A Look Back (Class A Basketball 1962-63)

DOVER - The Strasburg Tigers tried gallantly to salvage the county's pride against the Adena quintet, but couldn't come back from a big deficit.  The Tigers did; however, reap plenty of honors as they ended with a 20-5 slate, had 2 All-League selections, tied Midvale for the loop title, won  the tournament crown and had the Coach of the Year in Warren Binder.  Strasburg began the 1963 portion of their 1963-64 schedule on a glittering note, too, winning its initial 7 outings to go into the new year unbeaten.  Included in the Tigers' mark was a school record-breaking 122-45 triumph over Baltic.  That output fell one point shy of the county record set by Baltic in the 1956-57 campaign.

A flock of individual and team recorfds  were set, including:

1.  A total of 531 points scored by Midvale's Dean DeMattio, the county's MVP, for a season high at that school.

2.  Dick Gerber of Baltic, a 53-point game to tie the county mark for one game.

3.  Tuscarawas with a 115-72 not over Augusta.

4.  A 40-point total by Garaway's Don Deetz in a single outing.

5.  News that Gnadenhutten's Eldon Miller piloting Wittenberg to the top in the Associated Press small college ratings.
