64 - County Tourneys To Be Eliminated

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - The Ohio High School Athletic Association announced today that starting in 1965, all high school county basketball tournaments will be eliminated, throwing all competition into Sectional and District tournaments.  Paul Landis, association commissioner who made the announcement, said the decision was reached at a meeting of the association here Thursday night.  When the change takes effect, all Class AA and A schools will enter the State basketball elimination tournament by starting at the Sectional level.  When the change is made,he said, the Sectional and  District tournaments will be under the jurisdiction of the District athletic boards.  The change has been talked about for several years, and principal reason for it is the fact of the many school  consolidations.  This has eliminated many of the county schools.  Landis pointed out that in some counties there now are only two or three county high schools due to the consolidations.  He said the effect of the change will be more Sectional  tournaments.  Aside from selection of adequate sites to handle anticipated larger crowds, he said he expected no problem to arise from the change.  The new county consolidated high schools have been increasing in size in recent years as the number of schools in the counties decreased.

This looks like a good time to bring up the Tuscasrawas County Consolidation Championships  throughout the years.  We have already shown the Tuscarawas County Champions and Runners-up listings and this list would complete the picture.

Tuscarawas Consolidation Tournaments began in 1934 with Mineral City the first winner.  In 1957, Midvale would be the last champion due to the consolidation of four schools in 1958 and the league would go from 11 teams to 9.  The Tuscarawas Valley Trojans were made up from the merging of the Bolivar Cardinals school and the Mineral City Tigers.  The Garaway Pirates merger came from Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates and the Dundee Bulldogs.
