Bates Carries Riders To Win Over Broncos 66-59 (1-30-57)

The phenomenal shooting of Ed Bates carried the Port Washington Purple Riders (4-3) (11-5) to victory over the fired-up Tuscarawas Broncos (1-7) (1-14). From about 25-feet out, Ed Bates dropped them in with uncanny accuracy missing about three times in 18 attempts for 30 points and adding four fouls for 34 points for the evening. Port was pushed hard all the way by the charges of Coach Stanley Culp as the highly favored Riders held slim leads of 16-12, 31-28 and 48-47 at the end of the first three quarters. The hustling Broncos went ahead once by a 49-48 score early in the fourth period. Tusky kept pace with the Riders, but Ed Bates couldn't be stopped as the 6-1 senior netted 22 big points in the last half. Tusky gave an indication of new life for tournament play, while Port made a less impressive showing then their 77-42 win over Tusky earlier in the season. The Tuscarawas ReserveS topped the Port Washington Reserves (5-8) 34-29. And once again, the Tuscarawas Graders stopped the Port Washington Graders (3-2) 56-43.

Eagles Trail All The Way 81-79 (1-19-57)

With the two teams carrying identical season and league records into the contest, both squads put on a determined show, but the Baltic Eagles (4-2) (11-4), on their home court, gave the fans something to cheer about as Carl Wallace hit on a fielder and foul shot with only three seconds to go to bring in the victory for Baltic. Both teams had a 10-4 season and 3-2 league marks going into the contest in which the Purple Riders of Port Washington (3-3) (10-5) were heavily favored. Port Washington, as was expected, jumped into the lead in the first quarter, holding a 17-15 advantage, and then the two teams kept the same pace with Port leading 41-38 by halftime. The score was still close at the end of the third quarter with Port on top 60-56. Then in the final quarter, the Purple Riders started hitting well and at one time held an 11-point advantage, but Glen Reidenbach, who tallied a smashing 38 points for the evening, began whizzing them through for the Eagles. Right Down The Line (1-8-57)

Two of the top three teams in the Class A County Basketball League have a player who has averaged above 20 points thus far this season, while the only other two cagers who have hit over 20 points per game are from also-ran quintets, according to our unofficial records. Ed Bates of Port Washington, which has a 2-2 record in the loop, is the top scorer with 263 points in 11 games for a 23.9 average. Ron Deibel of Stone Creek, who has scored 274 in 12 games for a 22.8 average, and Jerry Froman of Strasburg, who has scored 202 in 10 games, follow Ed Bates. Stone Creek and Strasburg are both undefeated in league action. Bill Slemmer of Dundee, which hasn't won but one game in 10 starts, is fourth with 200 points and 20 markers per game. Merle Clum, 6-4 sophomore of Sugarcreek, is fifth with 19 points per game on a 209 total in 11 games. From here on down the players are well mixed with every team having at least two players scoring over 10 points. Baltic, who started the season off with a loss and then rolled over five foes before hitting the skids to post a 7-4 record thus far, has five players scoring in double figures with two of them just over the 16 point mark. Gnadenhutten has four with Eldon Miller being tops with 18.3 per game, while Strasburg also has four. A most unusual thing has occurred on the Tiger squad as three players have averaged 10.6 points on a 106 total in 10 games. Tuscarawas Valley has three men in double figures with Ben Price leading the trio with an 18.1 per game on 163 points in nine games, while Port Washington also has three in the double diget column with Ed Bates being tops. Stone Creek, Dundee, Sugarcreek, Midvale and Tuscarawas all have two players averaging over 10 points per game. The victory forced the league lead into a three-way tie as the Stone Creek Panthers racked up their third straight win in loop action by downing winless Tuscarawas 66-44 and the Tuscarawas Valley Trojans nipped Midvale 74-73 for its third loop win against no losses. The Trojans have a 7-1 season mark. In the other league contest Port Washington broke into the win column in the loop with a resounding 83-60 decision over Sugarcreek.

Port Slips By Roscoe 77-75 (12-19-56)

ROSCOE - Defense was tossed out the window here last night as the Roscoe Tigers (6-2) and the Port Washington Purple Riders (4-4) waged a torried scoring duel. Denver Glazer finally ended the struggle as he broke loose for a layup at the buzzer to give the Riders the decision. Ed Bates, who led both teams with 33 points, scored 18 in the fast first quarter which ended with Port Washington on top 33-24. Roscoe then took over 52-50 and 68-65 at the end of the next two quarters before the hectic final stanza. Denver Glazer followed Ed Bates with 16 points for the Riders, while Nick Frank added 12. Roscoe was paced by Ron Barrick and Bob Wright with 23 points each. Ron Barrick had previously been averaging 33 points per game. Gnaden Tops Loop Play (12-15-56)

The Stone Creek-Port Washington basketball game in the Tuscarawas County Basketball Class A League probably drew the most attention today. The Panthers nipped the inconsistent Purple Riders 73-72 and the win gives Stone Creek two victories and no losses in the loop. But, Gnadenhutten remains at the top of the pack in the league after trouncing Tuscarawas 79-38 for its third victory. Just last Tuesday Port Washington knocked off Gnaden in a non-loop tilt to put the only blemish on the Tribes' season record. The 1955-56 League Champion Strasburg Tigers will most likely have to be contended with again this year. Last night they won their second game in loop action with an 85-63 romp over Baltic and are tied with Stone Creek and Tuscarawas Valley with two wins. In the only other contest Sugarcreek blasted hapless Dundee 94-45.

Stone Creek Nips Port 73-72 (12-15-56)

Pouring 28 points through the hoop in the second quarter the Stone Creek Panthers (2-0)(7-2) came back after trailing 20-15 the first quarter to gain a lead and never relinquishing it throughout the contest in nipping Port Washington (0-2)(3-4). With the Panthers leading by two points and only 15 seconds to go Ben Wherley potted one of two foul attempts to give the winners a three point edge to cinch the contest. Jerry Hannahs of the losers made a layup near the end of the contest to narrow the margin to only one point, but the winners stalled the ball the remaining few seconds. Ron Deibel hit for his highest total of the yar, but didn't outshine Nick Frank of Port. Deibel tallied 13 fielders and five fouls for 31 points, but Frank also scored 31 on 10 fielders and 11 fouls. All five starters scored in double figures for the winners as Reuben Lorenz hit for 12 and Rod Reinhart, Wherley and Harold Baker each tallied 10 points. Big Ed Bates followed Frank in the scoring with 18. The Port Washington Reserves won their 3rd game of the year against 2 losses by stopping the Stone Creek Reserves 43-37.

Right Down The Line (12-14-56)

Now that the basketball season is under way all over the state there are probably many questions which will pop-up during the season both by fans and players. With each year new rules are added or nullified, strengthened or weakened according to how the officials of the rules committe decide the cage sport can be bettered. This year there are only a few major changes which will be noticed that are outstanding. One is that now instead of each team having a man next to the basket on a foul shot the defensive team is awarded both sports. This is to eliminate the easy field goal via a tip-in by a tall player of the foul shooting team. Second whenever a ball is taken out after a foul shot or field goal is made the team throwing the ball in must not be directly under the basket. The lines marking the foul lane are extended imaginarily off the playing court. If a player throws the ball to one of his teammates from that restricted area the ball is awarded to the opposing team. Another rule which probably won't occur but once in 100 games is that if two teams are tied at the end of one overtime and a foul is committed after the ball is dead (as the overtime ends) the player who is fouled is awarded the foul shots. When he steps to the foul circle officials consider the sudden death overtime started. Should the foul shooter make both attempts the game is automatically over since a team has to be two points ahead before it is awarded the game. This could happen without any actual time elapsing into the sudden death quarter. There are probably several other rules which will come up during the season, but we will not go into them at this time.

Port Washington Stops 6-Game Win Streak Of Gnadenhutten 64-61 (12-12-56)

GNADENUTTEN - The previously unsullied record of the Gnadenhutten Indians (2-0)(6-1)received its first blemish last night as the up-and-coming Port Washington Purple Riders (0-1)(3-3) upset the Tribe in a thriller on the Gnadenhutten court. It marked the first setback after six victories for Coach Dick Scott's Indians, while the Purple Riders of Coach Jim Pfeiffer, after dropping their first three games, have won three straight. Port Washington emerged on top 14-13 after a hectic initial period and, with Ed Bates, Denver Glazer and Nick Frank leading the way boosted the advantage to 30-21 at halftime. The PLurple Riders continued the onslaught and midway in the third frame had a 13-point edge before the Indians trimmed the deficit to 42-39 by the end of that quarter. Gnadenhutten rallied behind Eldon Miller and Larry Clark to take a temporary lead during the final quarter, but the Riders forged back to cop a one-point edge before Denver Glazer, with 20 seconds remaining, iced the verdict with two free throws. Five Purple Riders went the route with Ed Bates tallying 24 points to lead the attack. Denver Glazer added 18 and Nick Frank contributed 12. The Indians were topped by Eldon Miller who swished 20 points, although he sat out much of one quarter with four personals. Larry Clark and Larry Biggs hit 18 and 11, respectively. The Gnadenhutten Reserves turned back the Port Washington Reserves (2-2) 43-26. In the Grades game it was Port Washington (1-0) 34, Gnadenhutten 16.

County Action Slated (12-10-56)

In county action booked for tomorrow night the unbeaten Strasburg Tigers play host to once beaten Midvale. Port Washington goes to Gnadenhutten to battle the unsullied Indians and Baltic's Eagles go to Stone Creek. All of the games are non-league. The remainder of the county teams play non-league opponents as Dundee goes to Augusta and Tuscarawas travels to Lafferty. The Strasburg-Midvale clash could be the big one of the season in deciding which team is the real power in the county league, although Gnadenhutten will still have to be contended with. The Tigers of Coach Charles Caniford have stopped four straight opponents, while Midvale has chalked up two victories against one loss. The lone defeat coming at the hands of the Baltic Eagles.
*
INDIANS HAVE WON SIX
*
Neither team has met a common foe and the game will probably be a thriller as is the usual case. The Indians of Gnadenhutten are looking very strong this early in the season and have rolled over six straight opponents with the closest game being with an outside team in Freeport which they won by six points. Meantime, Port Washington, a late starter, lost the first three games of the season before romping over the last two opponents. The Purple Riders were slated as heavy favorites to cop the county league title in the preseason stories, but experienced trouble in getting started.

With Ed Bates scorching the nets for 32 points, the Port Washington Purple Riders (2-3) easily turned back the Scarlet scourge of Lafferty last night at Port Washington. Four Class A Tilts Tonight (12-7-56)

Four games are slated in the Tuscarawas County League with two of them destined to take the spotlight. The Gnadenhutten Indians, undefeated in five starts, play host to the Baltic Eagles who have won their last five outings, having dropped only their opening game. The other contest which should draw quite a bit of interest will be the Sugarcreek-Stone Creek tilt. The Pirates lost the first two games of the season by a total of five points and then rolled over their next two opponents, while the Panthers have a 4-2 record losing their opener and just last week dropping a close one to Tuscarawas Valley. Tuscarawas (0-2) treks to Tuscarawas Valley (3-1) in the other county tilt. Port Washington (1-3) plays host to Lafferty in a non-league contest.

Port Wins 1st At Uhrichsville 75-56 (12-3-56)

The Port Washington Purple Riders (1-3) basketball team finally broke the ice after losing its first three outings as they downed Uhrichsville at the Tiger gym Saturday night. The Riders lost their first three games by close margins, but finally jelled as the roundballers of Coach Jim Pfeiffer settled down and won the game at the foul circle. Both teams hit for 24 field goals, but the Riders took advantage of 50 foul attempts and made good on 27 of them. Port jumped to an early 24-12 first quarter lead and held a 41-27 advantage at half time. The young Tiger squad finally started hitting though and narrowed the third period Port lead to 51-46. But the Tiger scoring spree was short-lived as the Riders poured through 24 points the final stanza, while holding Uhrichsville to a mere five markers. Tom Lukens paced the Tigers and was tops for the evening with 22 points, while Junior Fanti added 13 points for the losers. Port had four men in double figures as Ed Bates and Denver Glaser each had 20, Nick Frank netted 15 and Jim Emler scored 14.

Port Washington (0-1)(0-3) was still without a victory in three starts after dropping its league opener to the Trojans of Tuscarawas Valley (1-0)(2-1) who exhibited their best offensive punch in three outings. Coach Jim Pfeiffer's Purple Riders battled the Trojans on nearly equal terms the initial period before falling behind 17-13 at the break. At halftime the Trojans had boosted their edge to 33-27. Port Washington Loses 2nd Outing To Killbuck 70-69 (11-28-56)

The Port Washington Purple Riders (0-2), touted to be one of the big guns in the county league, had their first victory snatched from their clutches last night by Killbuck (1-0) at Killbuck's home court. The Riders took a commanding 26-16 first quarter lead, but had it whittled to a 43-40 margin by half time. At the end of the third stanza they were trailing 57-51 as the Port cagers failed to connect from the field. Battling down to the last minute the Riders roared back, but their final drive failed as the clock ran out. Denver Glazer racked up 20 points, while Ed Bates scored 19 to pace Port, but individual efforts by Sturgeon who scored 23, Glassford who sank 17 and Purdy who potted 13 nullified the two big guns for the Riders. Only five men saw action for Killbuck in the victory as Tidball scored nine and Taylor netted eight to round out the winners scoring. Port previously dropped a 70-62 decision to the Stone Creek Panthers. The Killbuck Reserves (1-0) copped a 36-22 victory over Port's Reserves (0-1).

Panthers Edge Port 70-62 (11-21-56)

After trailing the majority of the first half the Stone Creek Panthers (1-1) finally came through to nip the Port Washington Purple Riders (0-1) at the Riders home court last night. Stone Creek trailed 17-10 at the first quarter, but edged ahead 30-27 at half time. The Riders wouldn't give up and the Panthers had a slim 52-46 lead at the third period stop, but wrapped it up in the final quarter. Stone Creek, coached by Ed McGlumphy who is at his first year at the helm, dropped its first game of the season to the high-riding Gnadenhutten Indians 60-46, but finally jelled into a team that could come through in the clinches. Ronnie Deibel was the big gun in the victory as he swished 11 field goals while adding six charity tosses for a big 28 points. Teammate Reuben Lorenz added to the cause with six buckets and five fouls for 17 markers. Ben Wherley was the only other Panther to score in double figures as he netted 10 points. The scoring was well spread out among the Riders, but high-scoring Ed Bates notched top honors for them with 19 markers, while Denver Glazer dropped in 15. Nick Frank scored eight, Jim Emler six and Jerry Hannahs seven to spread the scoring. Jim Pfieffer, head mentor of the Riders, had his team hurt considerable as he lost four of his regulars on personal fouls late in the crucial moments of the game. The setback was the initial game for the Riders who are slated to be very tough to deal with before the season is too far under way.

3 More County Cage Teams Pry Lid Off Basketball Season (11-20-56)

Three more county basketball teams pry the lid off their campaigns tonight as five games are booked for county and area quintets. Seeing action for the initial time are Strasburg, Port Washington and Tuscarawas Valley, while other participants have tasted previous competion. The evening's schedule sends Strasburg to Dalton, while Stone Creek is at Port Washington, Gnadenhutten at Warsaw, Dundee at Baltic and Tusky Valley at Sugarcreek. Coach Charles Caniford, who replaced Ken Newlon at Strasburg when the latter moved up to Canton Lincoln, has three lettermen from the team which went undefeated in 17 regular season games and copped the fourth straight unbeaten county league crown for Strasburg. The Tigers finished with a 21-2 record, losing only to Midvale in the county joust finals and to Yorkville in the district tourney. Only Jerry Froman, 6-0 Senior, had much varsity experience last season. Other returning veterans are Don Weber, 5-11 Senior, and Chuck Burris, 6-0 Junior. Port Washington, with three lettermen from the team which won 15 of 23 games under Coach Bray Toot and copped the consolation tourney for the first trophy in the school's history, will be under the tutelage of Jim Pfeiffer for the first time. Veteran Purple Riders include the high-scoring Ed Bates, 6-2, and Nick Frank, 6-3, and shifty little Denver Glazer, 5-9, all Seniors. The Trojans of Tusky Valley, under Coach Raymond Low who directred Bolivar's Cardinals last year, have five veteran Bolivar cagers and one letterman from Mineral City as they launch their first season in history. Ben Price, 6-2 Sophomore, is the lone Mineral City veteran, while ex-Cardinal lettermen include Ken Haueter, 6-1 senior, Wayne Ruof, 5-8 Junior, Dave Wolf, 6-0 Senior, John Geers, 5-6 Senior, and Roy Buchanan, 6-0 Sophomore.

Sugarcreek Defeats Port In 7th Frame 5-2 (9-28-56)

Sugarcreek is still in contention for the fall baseball title last night as they defeated Port Washington (2-2). Port opened the scoring in the last of the first frame when they filled the bases on three walks. Then with two men out Denver Glazer, speedy third baseman stole home for a 1-0 lead. Sugarcreek tied the game up in the third stanza on back to back singles and a fielders choice. Deibel Hurls 1-Hitter For Stone Creek, Port Wins 4-2 (9-18-56)

Baseball still hasn't given up the reigns to "king" football yet and the game between Stone Creek and Gnadenhutten last night at the Stone Creek diamond showed why. Ronnie Deibel, on the mound for Stone Creek, fashioned an almost perfect game in posting the 1-0 victory. He granted a single in the first inning to Meek of Gnaden for the only hit allowed the Indians. He didn't walk a man in the close contest. Clark, hurling for Gnaden, also pitched a fine game as he permitted only four hits, a double and single by Mel McAfee and singles by Wherley and Ellwood. In the Tuscarawas County high school baseball clash, Stone Creek punched across its lone and winning tally in the initial frame when McAfee hit his double to right center and after two men were out Whereley belted a single to left to score McAfee. Coach of the Stone Creek team was Ed McGlumphy and Scott was tutor of the Gnadenhutten Indians. In another county league tilt last night Port Washington (1-1) defeated the new consolidated Tuscarawas Valley 4-2. This is the first athletic team fielded by the new school. Jerry Hannahs (1-0) was the winning pitcher as he allowed five safeties while, Ben Price was charged with the loss being tagged for seven hits. Price got the only extra hit of the ball game, a double.
