DOVER - Warren L. Binder, 33, who brought basketball back to prominence at Strasburg during his 4 years there, has resigned to accept the Head Basketball job at Alliance High. Official signing of the 1-year contract is expected tonight at a special board meeting. Binder was one of 24 applicants for the position. The personable young mentor succeeds Ron Peeling, who resigned recently to devote full time to a faculty manager position. Peeling had been cage boss at Alliance 4 years. Binder thus makes the 6th Tuscarawas County Coach to change jobs this year. Previously, Joe Richards (Garaway), Errol Jacobs (Baltic), Bob Heller (Tuscarawas Valley), Ken Lawhun (Stone Creek) and Ed Baran (football at Tuscarawas Valley) either moved on or decided to devote full time to teaching. Strasburg enjoyed its best basketball season during 1962-63 since 1955 when a Tiger quintet posted a 26-3 record. This past season, Binder led the Tigers to a 20-5 slate, including a tie with Midvale for the Tuscarawas County Class "A" League title, the Tuscarawas County Tournament championship, the Sectional Tournament crown and runner-up in District Tournament action, losing out to Adena. Binder developed a 7-level basketball system at Strasburg, enabling students to participate in the sport at nearly all ages. He istalled the Tiger Mite program, elementary, broke up the Junior High into both 7th and 8th Grades, started a freshman team and used all sophomores on the reserve squad in addition to the varsity aggregation. Alliance officials are counting on Binder developing the same sort of program there. At the present, Alliance is known as "a football town." The Aviators posted a 5-15 varsity mark this past season, the reserves winning just 2 games. And only one letterman returns for next year's varsity squad."Although Alliance is mainly a football town ast this time, residents there have a desire to see basketball stimulated and developed," Biknder said. "It willbemy job to install a basic program and to coordinate the entire system." ""I have mixed emotions about leaving Strasburg and going to Alliance. But this is both an opportunity and a challenge. My major goal is to generate and develop a basketball program at least comparable to its football program." "I was looking forward to being at Strasburg next season when I would have had the same group of boys I started out with as freshmen." "Parents and friends at Strasburg have been good to me and they, along with the school administration and board of education, were behind me through the long rebuilding process."
