PORT WASHINGTON - The Gnadenhutten Indians (1-0) had to fight all the way here Tuesday night, but managed to hang on and pull out a victory over Port Washington in their first 1963-64 basketball outing. The Oren Thompson-coached Tribe took a narrow 11-9 lead at the 1st stop and went into the locker room at intermission ahead 20-18.  The 3rd period actually spelled the difference as the Indians canned 14 points to only 6 for the Don Durham-coached Purple Riders.  "Defense won for us," Thompson said, "that's all there is to it.  We kept Port from getting  the good shots and Terry Huebner and Don Garrett did a great job on Ken Gay (Port Washington's top scoring threat)."  Larry Rentsch led the victory with 12 points.  Bruce Kohl tossed in 11.  Leonard Cameron and Steve Bender were high for the hosts with 8.  Gnaden canned 18 of 65 action shots for 29 percent and made 9 of 20 fouls.  Port Washington hit on 15 of 49 from the floor for 31 percent and sank 8 of 20 free throws.  Kohl pulled down 17 rebounds for the Indians.  Cameron and Jim Bates led the board work for the Purple Riders.  There was no report of a Reserve game.
