GNADENHUTTEN - A 3-run 4th inning wiped out a one-run deficit and propelled Strasburg (4-0) to victory over Gnadenhutten (9-2) yesterday and right into next week's Class A District Baseball Tournament. The Tigers will face either Shadyside or Powhatan Tuesday on the Gnadenhtten diamond. Shadyside and Powhatan meet today at Martins Ferry. At stake Tuesday will be a trip to the North Canton Regional. In advancing to District action Strasburg stands atop an original 12-team field. Unable to play any pre-tourament contests because of poor field conditions, Strasburg, behind the pitching of stong-armed Bob Mills and a hard hitting lineup, beat Baltic 24-0, Dover St. Joseph 13-1 and Tuscarawas Valley 5-1 prior to yesterday's win.
Mills (4-0) again was right in the midst of the battle. He and Indian Sophomore southpaw Bill Kohl (4-1) matched pitches before the latter left the mound with one out in the 5th inning and all 5 Strasburg runs plated. The Strasburg hurler, who went to 3rd base temporarily when shortstop Ron Lab (0-0) came in to squelch a Gnadenhutten rally with 2 outs, pitched 6.7 innings, striking out 7 and walking 2. He was touched for 3 hits and a double by Steve Moore. Kohl, prior to giving way to righthander Jim Jinks (1-0), fanned 8, walked 3 and permitted 5 hits, 2 of them infield scratch singles. Jinks fired perfect ball in his 2-inning stint, striking out 3.
After 2 scoreless innings, Gnadenhutten hopped into the front runner's spot by scoring a lone run. Kohl became the 1st Indian to successfully hit Mills when he drilled a single through short. Terry Huebner followed with a line drive over the head of 2nd baseman John Studer. Huebner was forced at 2nd a short time later when Gene Bates sent a broken-bat dribbler to Lab. Moore, who came in to play in the bottom of the 1st inning when regulasr Roy Williams had 4 teeth knocked out on a throw from catcher Dan Jinks, walked to fill the bases. Gary Rice had a 0-1 count on him when Mills pitch struck himon the arm, forcing in Kohl and accounting for Gnaden's run. Strasburg came back strong in the 4th frame, all but putting victory in the bag. Lab led off by reaching 1st on a roller between the mound and first. It was fielded by Kohl who fired it wildly into Lab's back. Rocky VanFossen topped a bounder into the dirt and on the attempted force play, Gnaden's Huebner dropped the ball. That's when the Indians pulled a bit of strategy that proved futile. Coach Ted Martin called in rightfielder Wayne Martin and posted him to the pitcher's right in anticipation of the bunt, giving the Indians 6 infielders. Strasburg batter Studer bunted, but Gnadenhutten didn't have a man covering 1st and all hands were safe. Don Gerber then smashed a high fly deep to left field with Lab tagging up and scoring after the catch. VanFossen scored on a bounder to 3rd by Terry Spidell and Studer tallied on a passed ball with Mills at bat. Strasburg added 3 more markers in the 5th inning on a walk to Tom Dreher and successive singles by Lab and VanFossen. All took place with one out. That's when Jinks was called to the mound. It was only the 2nd defeat for Gnadehutten.
