65 - Gnadenhutten Slams Hiland 12-0 (5-3-65)
Heroes of Gnadenhutten's 12-0 tournament victory over Hiland gather for a post-game huddle. Roy Williams, who had a triple and 2 singles, shows winning pitcher Bill Kohl the bat that turned the trick. Looking on are pitcher Jim Jinks, who hurled 3 scoreless innings and Gary Rice, who counted a double and 2 singles to drive in 3 runs.
GNADENHUTTEN - Both Mills and Kohl figured prominently in their teams victories Monday afternoon during semifinal action. Gnadenhutten (9-1) blanked Hiland 12-0. Kohl (4-0) went 4 innings before being switched to right field for a rest from his mound chores. At the time, Gnaden was leading 11-0. Jim Jinks (1-0), a righthander, pitched the final 3 frames. During his stint, Kohl struck out 7, yielding 4 hits and walked one. Jinks was touched for 5 hits, fanned 4 and walked none.
In achieving its victory, Gnaden was fast getting out of the starting gate, slamming Hiland starter Don Yutzy for 6 runs on 4 hits in the 1st inning. Leadoff man Terry Huebner started the fireworks when he was struck on the wrist by a Yutzy pitch. On a slow roller hit to the 2nd baseman by Gene Bates, Huebner slid hard into 2nd causing Hiland shortstop Art Miller, to drop the ball averting a possible double play and leaving all hands safe. Roy Williams then connected for the 1st of 3 hits, that included a triple, driving in Huebner. Gary Rice slammed a 2 and 1 offering into left field, scoring Bates and Williams. Miller followed with a single and Ray Williams connected for a 300-foot double. Both scored on a 3rd strike passed ball by catcher John Schneider. The Tribe scored once in the 2nd when Rice singled, driving in Roy Williams who had tripled. The Indians added 2 markers in the 4th on singles by Roy and Ray Williams and Dan Jinks and a 2-bagger by Rice. They wrapped up the scoring in the 5th frame on consecutive singles by Huebner and Bates.
Meanwhile, Hiland had 2 runners on base in each the 3rd, 4th and 5th innings, but each time its rallies were cut short by clutch pitching and outstanding fielding. One Hawk batsmen who didn't have trouble with Indian hurling was 1st baseman John Hochstetler. He numbered a double and 2 singles in 3 times at bat. Galen Swartzentruber had 2 hits, including a double. Yutzy, who was charged with the loss, pitched 5 innings, permitting 12 hits, walked none and struck out 5. Devon Stutzman who toiled the final 2 innings yielded only one hit, struck out 4 and walked 1.
One of the finest pitching duels of the season is in the offering for county baseball fans able to travel to Gnadenhutten Wednesday afternoon. Pitted against each other will be Strasburg's fire-balling righthander Bob Mills and Gnadenhutten's Sophomore southpaw ace Bill Kohl. The pair has been listed as the most likely starters when the Tigers (3-0) and Indians (9-1) collide for the right to advance to the one-game District Sectional Tournament. It will take place next Tuesday at 3PM on the Gnadenhutten diamond with Wednesday's victor facing the Martins Ferry Class A Sectional Champion.
