66 - Dover St. Joseph's Nips Tusky Valley 49-47 (12-7-65)
"I've got it," Trojan Harold Swinford says as he grabs a loose ball from Rambler Rich Bollini who had lunged for the ball. Others in photo are Rambler Larry Smith and Trojans Larry Adams and Chuck Fishley (43).
This action involves Ramblers Denny Capozella (30) and Mickey McCracken and Trojans Harold Swinford (55), Terry Hay and Chuck Fishley.
DOVER - Dover St. Joseph's led most of the way then had to come from behind in the final stages to edge Tuscarawas Valley (1-2) last night. The game, which appeared to belong to the Ramblers (3-0) who led 37-30 going into the 4th quarter, was decided when Denny Capozella tossed in a goal from the side of the key with 9 seconds left. Capozella's heroics were set up by sparkplug Larry Smith who took the ball out of bounds at the far end of the court and fired a long pass to his teammate. Smith, 5-11 Senior, kept the Art Teynor-coached Ramblers in contention the 2nd half during which he netted 13 of his 15 total points. He got 7 in the pressure-packed final frame in which Bill Frye's Trojans rallied furiously.
St. Joseph's divided its quarter points almost equally and led 12-8 at the 1st stop and 24-17 at the half. Tuscarawas Valley, with Terry Hay, Joe Deubner, Larry Adams and Chuck Fishley all tossing in points, pulled to within 2 points before Hay tied it 39-all at 4:52 on 2 tosses from the foul line. Deubner then gave Tuscaraws Valley its 1st lead since an early 4-0 advantage by sinking a pair of charity throws. Al Antonelli came right back with a pair for the Ramblers and then Adams and Rambler Pat Antonelli traded baskets, the latter off his own stray foul shot. This left the count knotted 34-34 at 1:53. Deubner then missed a long shot and the ball went out of bounds to the Ramblers who immediately pulled ahead as the clutch-working Smith dropped in a goal from the baseline near the corner. Adams dumped in a 2-pointer for the Trojans, but Smith, appearing to be at his best when the pressure got greatest, scored again to put his team on top 47-45 with 43 seconds remaining.
Each team committed a pair of turnovers, then Fishley picked off a Rambler pass and pushed the ball up and in to tie it 47-47. Teynor called time out and Smith then fired to Capozella who raced behind a perfect screen by his teammates. The contest resembled a football game at times and some wondered if it wasn't a rematch of that 2-point Rambler victory back on October 30. Last night's tussle was about as close as that gridiron test, with both teams hitting on 18 field goals, the Ramblers sinking 13 of 25 fouls to 11 of 25 for the Trojans, St. Joseph's leading 28 to 27 in rebounds and the hosts being called for 19 personals and the visitors 18. St. Joseph's took 45 field goal tries for 40 percent, while Tuscarawas Valley shot 51 times for 36 percent.
Smith was the game's top scorer and the only Rambler in double figures; although, the rest of the attack was well balanced. Al Antonelli netted 9 points as did Mickey McCracken before the latter fouled out with 7:41 left in the game. Dave Myers hit for 8 markers, Capozella 6 and Pat Antonelli 2. Myers and Al Antonelli pulled down 11 rebounds apiece. Deubner and Adams both got 11 points for the Trojans, with Fishley netting 10, Hay 8, Harold Swinford 4 and Ray Nist 3. St. Joseph's committed 15 turnovers and Tuscarawas Valley 7. The Trojans; however, took many shots from far out, while the Ramblers divided their's equally. The Ramblers, off to their best start since 1961-62 when they won 16 of 18 games. The Tuscarawas Valley Reserves topped the Dover St. Joseph's Reserves 40-30.
