Playing before more than 1,800 screaming fans who jammed Memorial Hall last night, Midvale, Garaway and Stone Creek roared to victories in the opening round of the 36th annual County Class A Tournament. Left behind on "heartbreak trail" of the single elimination event were Port Washington , Strasburg and Baltic, as two of the victorious teams tallied 72 points each and the other one 71. Garaway (12-10), which accounted for a mild surprise by sidetracking Strasburg (11-8) 72-63, returns to action Saturday night, meeting Tuscarawas Valley at 7:30. Making their debut at 8:45 will be Gnadenhutten and Tuscarawas. As was expected Midvale (17-2), the undefeated winners of the County League crown, had little trouble in disposing of Port Washington (1-18) 71-42. Maintaining the victory tempo, Stone Creek (13-8) topped Baltic (12-8) 72-67. During the regular season, Strasburg had beaten Garaway 56-46, but the Pirates gained ample revenge last night. Fans couldn't remember when Strasburg had lost a tourney opener. The Stone Creek-Baltic game was a "rubber" battle. During the regular campaign, Baltic won 72-52 on its floor and Stone Creek won 70-57 on its court. Gnadenhutten, which finished second in the league race with a 6-2 record, enters tomorrow night's fray with 15 victories in 20 games. Tuscarawas, seventh in the loop, was 5-12 for the season. Tuscarawas Valley will pit an 11-5 record against Garaway. The Memorial Hall doors will open at 6:30 tomorrow night.
