67 - Gnaden Trips Scio 5-2 (4-27-67)

GNADENHUTTEN - The Gnadenhutten Indians (1-0) (4-1) behind the 2-hit pitching of Bill Kohl (3-0), advanced to the Class A Sectional semi-finals yesterday.  Kohl recorded 14 strikeouts in the Indians' verdict over Scio (1-1).  It was a battle of the southpaws in the nightcap with Kohl outlasting Scio's Paul Baker, who had tossed a one-hitter against Midvale on Tuesday night.  The Indians struck first, scoring 2 runs in  the 2nd frame when Ken Huprich walked, Don Finnicum was safe on an error  by Rich Downs and Danell Laughlin was hit by a pitch to load the bases with Steve Moore coming to bat.  He hit a sacrifice fly to score Huprich and Dan Jinks popped a single (1) to send Finnicum home.  Scio tied the score in the 4th when Randy Snyder singled for the 1st hit off Kohl, who had struck out 9 of the first 11 batters.  Skip Haffner forced Snyder, but walks to Eddie Edwards and Jim Allensworth loaded the bases.  Rick Downs then cracked a single to drive in the tying runs.

Mike Kail slammed a double (1) in Gnaden's half of the 5th and a wild pitch, a hit batsman and an error by Downs gave the Indians another 2-run lead.  The insurance run came in the 6th when a catcher-interference call, an error and a single by Moore (6) were recorded.  Baker fanned 8, walked 3 and yielded 5 hits in the 5 innings he worked.  He was relieved by Downs.  Kohl passed 3 batters.  Moore led the Indians' hitting with 2 hits (7) and 2 runs batted in.  Downs had 2 runs batted in for the Panthers.
