67 - Port Honors Last of the Purple Riders

Port Washington athletes join Jeff Huston in admiration of his Most Valuable Player award.  He was also named basketball's top rebounder.  Greg Bender was honored for best foul shooting and 4 years of Varsity baseball.  Bob Porter received a 4 year baseball award.  Principal Neil Compton makes the trophy presentation and Kim Cappel was named the top Reserve foul shooter.

PORT WASHINGTON - Approximately 175 people attended the Port Washington Boosters' Club banquet last night at Bonvechio's to honor their boy and girl athletes.  It was the last event under that name, as next year Port and Gnadenhutten will be consolidated as part of Indian Valley District.  Although there was no guest speaker, each coach summed up season play.  Principal Neil Compton served as toastmaster.  Basketball letters and tie tacks were given to Junior High, Reserve and Varsity players.  Copping trophies for best rebounder and most valuable player was Jeff Houston.  High free thrower award went to Greg Bender, who netted 80 percent in game play.  Baseball awards followed in similar fashion.  Houston and Jim McCume received accolades for 3 years of Varsity competition.  Greg Bender and Bob Porter received 4 year awards.

The girls' track team, which won the County Championship, was given special recognition.  Girls with outstanding achievements were:  Janie Mizer, Polly Steinbach, Sue Beeper, Becky Bender, Pam Fillman, Sherry Toffert, Grace Hopper, Jeanne McCume and Melody Glazer.  Boy tracksters were given letters and congratulated for scoring 22 points in the County meet.

Mrs. Barbara Westhaver, who gave the cheerleader awards, was given special recognition by the Boosters' Club as Booster of the Year.  The 2 hour program was concluded by singing Port Washington's Alma Mater.
