COLUMBUS - Tigertown is tingling with tournament tension as Strasburg High School's Basketball Team prepares for its State Tournament battle with Ross Southeastern Friday afternoon at 1:30 in Ohio State University's St. John Arena.  The mighty Tigers are looming more each day as the favorite to win  the State Class A Championship.  They are riding the crest of an undefeated 25-game victory streak and have a long list of outstanding credentials that have attracted the attention of sports writers and fans from throughout Buckeyeland.  Folks in Strasburg have a special feeling about this year, different from any of the others that have always ended in frustration.

The Bengals are a solid club, possessors of great rebound strength along with a superb defense.  The personnel is outstanding as recent injuries and sickness have been overcome by a strong bench.  Head Coach Charles Huggins is the last to admit it, but after talking to him you walk away wearing the pride he possesses of his...dedicated Tigers.  More than anything else, the Bengals have pride and confidence with just a bit of cockiness that lingers in every good team's dressing room.  This spirit is typified most by All-Ohio John Studer whom Huggins calls the...thinker.  He could carry the Tigers to the State Crown.  He provides high quality leadership and inspiration.

Studer paces the attack with a 27-point average and has accumulated well over 600 markers this season.  Charlie Jones, a 6-3 guard, is the 2nd leading scorer.  He has connected on a pet jump shot for over 300 tallies this year.  Jones can shoot with the best from outside and his height is an extra advantage on defense as tall guards are a rarity in small school basketball.  Rounding back into condition is the strong stalwart on the boards, 6-2 Senior Ed Yackey who provides muscle and drive to the defense.

The lone underclassman is Ed Rusk, 6-foot Junior who specializes in applying the brakes to opponents' top scoring aces.  Often times the classy lefthander is out sized, but still manages to turn in a highly commendable performance.  A lad who patiently waited for a starting berth, while at the same time played with equal ability at numerous positions is 6-4 Senior Gene Bayer.  The much improved Bayer has turned in starring roles each time he was called upon.  Coach Huggins is the 1st to toss praises for the heavy tournament load that was bestowed upon the personable jack of all trades.  Another stalwert Huggins tabs as one of his best front court defensive aces, Gary Phillips, played the role of rescue to the hilt when Mike Rieger was forced from the lineup with illness.

Huggins rapidly points to several occasions where Phillips has put the stops to some pretty good driving opponents forcing them into only outside shots.  The Tigers' highly successful mentor proudly points to his bench and states, "Everyone of these boys actually should be playing somewhere.  I have no fear in their ability to do the job if they must be called on.  We have guarded against being a team of only a few."
