67 - Hiland Blasts Malvern 10-5 (4-27-67)
SUGARCREEK - Hiland's Hawks (1-0) soared into the Class A Sectional Baseball Tournament yesterday on the strength of heavy artillery provided by Carl and Galen Swartzentruber. The 2 heavy hitters bombed the Malvern Green Hornets (1-1) right out of tournamnt play by blasting 5 of the Hawks' 7 hits in pacing the victory on Garaway Field. The win moves Hiland into semi-final play at Gnadenhutten Monday against Port Washington (1-0).Included in the Swartzentrubers' performances were a 1st Inning Home Run and a 7th inning double by Galen and a 6th inning double by Carl, along with additional singles for each. Al Hershberger also clubbed a 2-bagger for the winners. Another thorn in Malvern's side was the pitching of Ronnie Keim, a fireballing Freshman who didn't allow the Hornets a hit until shortstop Dave Early slapped a grounder past 2nd in the 7th and last frame.
Keim gave up 8 of 11 walks in the last 2 innings. He struck out 11, mostly with a hopping fast ball. Errors played a major part in scoring as the Hornets tallied 1 run in the 6th without a hit and Hiland had a total of 3 unearned runs. Malvern came to life in the 7th as Key Munroe walked and Early came through with his single to right. Keim walked 3 straight and Frank Clark cleaned the sacks with the final hit given by the tiring pitcher. But Keim regained his poise long enought to end the contest with 2 strikeouts. Starting Hornet hurler Bill Munroe took the loss as he gave up 7 runs and 6 hits, while striking out 5 and walking two. Lefhander Jim Yockey relieved Munroe in the 6th with 2 on and finished the game. He was charged with 4 runs, 2 unearned, while striking out 4.
