67 - John Studer Named To VFW Senior Athlete Of The Year For 1967







CANTON - John Studer, Strasburg's All-Ohio Class A cager, has been voted the outstanding Senior Athlete of the Year by the sports writers and sportscasters in Area 9-County District, sponsored by the 6th District, Veterans of Foreign Wars.  John and his parents will be guests of the VFW at a banquet to be held at VFW Post 693, Canton, on Saturday, May 20th at 6:30PM.  He will receive a trophy and will be the District's choice as a candidate for the State VFW award to be presented July 1st at Cincinnati.

The 6-3 Senior scored 701 points this past basketball season as he led Strasburg to a 17-0 record, climaxed by winning the Class A State Championship.  He scored 1,586 points during the 3 years to place 3rd on Tuscarawas County's all-time list.  He shattered all school records this year.  A punter for the football team, he averaged more than 40 yeards per kick and is an excellent hitter on the baseball team and holds the school record in the high hurdles.

His all-around ability goes beyond sports.  He is an outstanding musician in the high school band, which received No. 1 rankings in State competition.  He received a Superior rating in State 2 years with the tuba and has been an honor student 4 of 5 6-week periods this year.  He is President and Student Director of the Band, FCA Vice President, Future Teachers Club, editor of the school paper and belongs to the Varsity Club.

A two-time All-Ohio pick by the AP and UPI, he also received honorable mention to the Prep All-American basketball team sponsored by Coaches and Athlete magazine and the Royal Crown Bottling Co.  Studer, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John E. Studer, 424 North Wooster Avenue, Strasburg, has also received more than 100 offers from interested colleges.

All sports writers and sportscastors in the voting had high praise for Studer and voted Danny Todd, Canton Lincoln's all-star cager, as the runner-up.  Others in the poll included Rich McCoy, Alliance footballer; Mark Berg, Dalton basketball player; Mike Palmer, all-state halfback from Steubenville Big Red and Bill Kidd, New Philadelphia gridder.
