65 - Midvale Drops Stone Creek From Unbeaten With 55-47 Win (12-11-64)
No, it isn't a stick up, but Blue Devils' Bob Carlisle (21) and Tom Daniels (43) battling Panther Vic Turner for a rebound. At left is Stone Creek's John Flinner.
Midvale's Dan Kohler lets fly with a jump shot past the efforts of Stone Crfeek's John Bihari.
STONE CREEK - It's a question as to who outscrapped whom. But, the final tally would indicate Midvale (2-0) (5-0) had just that little extra edge. Stone Creek (1-1) (4-1); however, which lost its floor general, Jim Wherley, with the score knotted 37-37 early in the final stanza, made a game bid for its 5th straight triumph. The Panthers, paced by Tim Baab and John Bihari in the scoring department as they tallied 16 and 10 points, respectively, moved to a 9-1 lead at the outset. They continued to hold the upper hand until one second remained in the 3rd period when Blue Devil ace Dan Kohler hit successfully from the field and foul line to deadlock the count at 33-33. Behind early in the final period, Stone Creek regained the lead once more at 42-41 before the Blue Devils went on a scoring rampage, tallying 12 points, while blanking the hosts over the same span. Midvale's Kohler, who is a carbon copy both in physical appearance and floor mannerisms of former Baltic High star John Rice, set the pace for both teams. He fired in 28 points, connectig on 12 shots from the field and 4 of 5 free throws. Stone Creek, in its losing effort, meshed 17 of 47 shots from the field for 36.1 percent and 13 of 26 free throws for 50 percent. The Blue Devils, who in their 3rd period comeback fired 25 shots at the basket, ended the night by making 29 of 64 for 31.3 percent. They had an excellent night at the charity stripe, swishing 15 of 20. The Stone Creek Reserves (3-0) nipped the Midvale Reserves (1-2), 36-34.
