65 - Lakeland Lowers The Boom On Midvale 59-55 (1-16-65)

IN A CLASS BY THEMSELVES.  All alone as the area's only undefeated basketball team are the Midvale High Blue Devils:  KNEELING - Manager Bill Tinor (left), Dan Fox, Bill Belba, Coach Pete Hilliard, Terry Leggett and Ted Tolloti.  STANDING - Manager Doug Stafford (left), Bob Carlisle, John Montan, Dan Kohler, Bill Hibbs, Charles DeMattio, Tom  Daniels and  Manager Mark Renicker.  Harvey Byers was absent when photo was taken.

FREEPORT - No. 13, long associated with misfortune, was just that for Midvale's surprising  basketballers (13-1) here Saturday night.  Although they were expected to be no more than average this season, the Pete Hilliard-coached Blue Devils knit together for 13 consecutive victories.  Included in  the string are some extremely close games such as an overtime test against Conotton Valley, a 1-point decision over Hopedale and a pair of toughies with Strasburg.  But, "Lady Luck" caught up with the Blue Devils against Lakeland (8-3) and they fell.  They didn't go down without a struggle; however, scoring 29 points in the final frame after getting just 26 the first 3 quarters put together.  Main reason for the reversal was that the Blue Devils canned just 18 of 70 action flings for a miserable 26 percent.  They sank 19 of 28 charities.  As  cold as their shooting eyes were, the Blue Devils still outscored their guests from  the floor as Lakeland drilled in just 17 of 41 for 41 percent.  But, the Red Raiders popped in 25 of 36 fouls.  Midvale going into a desperation press, pulled to within 3 points with 2 1/2 minutes left to play, but Lakeland sank 8 consective free throws to pull out of reach.  "We have no excuses," Hilliard said.  "We just couldn't hit.  Maybe the pressure was too much."  Terry Leggett paced the Blue Devils in scoring with 16 points.  Bob Carlisle had 14 and Dan  Kohler 12.  Leggett and Kohler both notched 8 in  the final frame.  Midvale led in rebounds, 37-29 and committed just 4 turnovers to 15 for Lakeland.  Thirteen of the Red Raiders' miscues came in the 2nd half.  Kohler pulled down 8 rebounds and Carlisle 7.  The Blue Devils visit Tuscarawas Valley Saturday.  The Midvale Reserves (6-5) overwhelmed the Lakeland Reserves 50-24.
