65 - Meet The 1964-65 Garaway Pirates

Garaway High School (Pirates) Basketball.  The fortunes of Garaway High's basketball team this season depends on:  KNEELING - Don Richardson (left), John Fankhauser, Terry Gerber, Jim Young, Tom Moomaw and Dex Sedwick.  STANDING - Manager Tom Courtright (left), Ron  Raber, Randy Miller, Rod Showers, Dan Andreas, Jeff Trachsel and Dave Andreas.  The Pirates, 1-0, open league play Friday at Tuscarawas Valley.

SUGARCREEK - Garaway High doesn't have to take a back seat to anyone as far as basketball talent is concerned.  The Pirates, whose 8-12 record in 1962-63 interrupted a string of great seasons, bounced back last year with a 12-8 slate.  And, the outlook is even brighter this time around!  Reasons for the optimism are:  Eight Pirates standing 6-0 or more, plus the return of Coach Glenn Bower who led the 1960-61 combine to a 21-5 slate, including a District Tournament spot and the 1961-62 aggregation to a 17-7 ledger.

You also must add Junior Jim Young to the plus side of the book.  Allthough standing a mere 5-7, Young is regarded by most who have seen him play as one  of thefinest ball handler in the state.  With him in the lineup, Pirate foes may as well forget any notions about employing the press.  It just doesn't work.  Young can score well, too, as indicated by his 154 points last season, good for 3rd on  the club behind graduated Don Deetz (303) and returnee Randy Miller (226).  Also gone is Tim Stevanus who popped in 100 tallies last campaign.  Bower hasn't listed his starting lineup as yet, but here is the talent he can choose from, in addition to Young:

Senior Randy Miller, 6-2
Senior Ron Raber, 6-1
Senior Jeff Trachsel, 6-2
Junior Dan Andreas, 6-2
Junior Rod Showers, 6-3
Junior Terry Gerber 5-8
Junior Dave Andreas, 6-1
Junior Tom Moomaw, 5-9
Junior Larry Pope, 5-9
Sophomore Don Richardson, 6-0

"One of our most presiding problems will be replacing our graduated Seniors," Bower said, "as we lost 4 of last year's top 7.  The boys we must replace them with have very little experience.  However, we feel that as cour newcomers gain experience we can develop into a good team."  The pirates open 1964-65 activity Saturday at Gnadenhutten.
