STRASBURG - Snap! That sound isn't from a hunter stepping on a twig in the woods, it's the result of the Strasburg-Midvale basketball tussle here Saturday night. Back on January 5, 1962, Midvale invaded the Tigers' lair and went away with a 46-31 victory. Since that time Tiger teams have rolled to 22 straight home court wins. So what happens Saturday? Midvale (2-0) makes a great comeback to salt away its 2nd victory of the season and break Strasburg's home court string. Pete Shahan's Tigers appeared well on their way to the decision, leading 45-33 after 3 quarters of activity. But then the roof fell in, primarily because the Blue Devils of Coach Pete Hilliard had radar-like eyes from the foul lines. Although pumping 4 less goals through the hoops than Strasburg, Midvale got the win by sinking an almost unbelieveable 23 of 26 charity tosses. The Tigers; meanwhile, sank 12 of 17 free throws. In the final frame alone, Midvale popped 14 of 16 charities through the nets. Strasburg held the upper hand until 2:30 left in the game. At that point, the Devils tied the count and then Terry Leggett sank both of a one-and-one situation to put Midvale on top 52-50. Ron Lab came right back with a bucket for Strasburg and Leggett and Rick Hall exchanged 2 pointers. Ted Tolloti of Midvale then sank a pair of charities to give the Blue Devils the advantage, 56-54. The hustling Lab tried gallantly to pull the Tigers even once more, stealing the ball and driving in for a layup. But his efforts went for naught as the ball rolled around the rim and jumped back out. The clock showed 11 seconds. Dan Kohler grabbed a rebound and was fouled. He sank the shot to make the score 57-54 as the whistle blew. Strasburg's battlers controlled the boards, pulling down 48 rebounds to Midvale's 32. Hall and Rock VanFossen each grabbed 14 and teammate John Studer, just a Sophomore, snared 10. Kohler was high for Midvale with 10. Leading the point-makers for Strasburg were Tom Dreher with 17, Hall got 15 and VanFossen totaled 12. High for Midvale was Kohler with 20, Leggett added 15. Kohler and Leggett worked for 9 and 8 markers, respectively, in the clutch final frame. Both teams return to action Friday.
