65 - Meet The 1964-65 Strasburg Tigers

Strasburg High School (Tigers):  Carrying the basketball fortunes at Strasburg High this season are:  KNEELING - Bob Mills (left), Ron Lab, Tom  Dreher,Terry Hess and John Studer.  STANDING - Manager Kenny Myers (left), Dick Gerber, Ed Yackey, coach Robert (Pete) Shahan, Rock VanFossen, rick Hall and  Manager Leslie McGrath.  The Tigers open 1964-65 action November 28 against Midvale.
STRASBURG - Bob Shahan, Strasburg High basketball coach, has 2 problems.  One is pleasant the other isn't.  Taking the latter first, he must figure out a way to improve on last year's gleaming 22-2 slate which carried the fighting Tigers all  the way to the Regional Tournament where they bowed by a scant 4 buckets to tough Mogadore  On the debit side of the ledger; however, are several  spirited performers who are anxiously awaiting a chance at that mark.  Shahan took over the Tiger reins just last year and saw his talented lads sweep to 11 consecutive victories before Garaway broke  the bubble by a 66-45 tally.  From then on until Mogadore,  it was all victories, including an avenging 27-25 decision over those same Pirates.  Three of the top scorers on the 1963-64 aggregation are gone through graduation, including:

Amazing John Peters
Tough Dan Wallick
Steady Vic Gessner

Also departed are:

Fred Scherer
Mike Mercier
John Thomas

But just look at the returnees!

Senior Ron Lab, 5-11 Guard
Senior Tom Dreher, 5-9 Guard
Senior Rick Hall, 6-3 Center
Senior Rock Van Fossen, 5-11 Forward
Senior Don Gerber, 6-1 Forward
Senior Terry Hess, 5-8 Guard
Junior Don Edie, 5-6 Guard
Junior Dick  Fox 6-1 Forward
Sophomore John Studer, 6-3 Forward
Sophomore Ed Yackey, 6-2 Center
Sophomore Gary Feller, 5-8 Guard

Quite an array of talent.  Lab, VanFossen and Hall are lettermen.  VanFossen also earned a monogram his Sophomore year.  Add to this list the person of Senior Bob Mills, 6-0, who missed last season because  of a football injury.  He did a fine job as a Freshman and Sophomore and is expected to be a valuable asset to the team, particularly in the latter stages of the campaign.  Shahan, who is assisted by Dick Gummers, says the players shoot well and are quick, but need more work on defense.
