65 - Stone Creek Downs Port Washington 65-57 (11-20-64)
You'll see plenty of action like this during the season as cagers jump for a rebound. Going through the "motions" are Panthers Gara Mizer (53) and Vic Turner.
Where's the ball? It's here somewhere and trying to come up with it are Stone Creek's Tim Baab (43), Dave Weber (41) and Gara Mizer (extreme right) and Port Washington's Russel Daughtory (40), Rich Fillman (number hidden), Leonard Cameron (42) and Rich West (center rear).
PORT WASHINGTON - Stone Creek (1-0) and Port Washington (0-1) opened basketball action in Tuscarawas County here last night, the Panthers subduing the stubborn Purple Riders. Another Tuscarawas County quintet, Baltic (0-0), visits Adamsville (0-0) tonight. The Panthers of head tutor Charles Huggins jumped into a 13-10 1st quarter advantage and coasted to the victory. The Purple Riders, under Head Coach George Thomas, fell behind 7 points midway in the 2nd stanza and could come no closer than a 5-point gap in the fading minutes of the game. Opening game jitters bothered both squads as neither team could find the range in the 1st half. The tempo picked up after intermission. The Panthers, who were without the services of veteran guard Jim Wherley for most of the 2nd and 3rd quarters were led by sharp-shooting forward Vic Turner with 17 markers. Veteran guard John Flinner added 10 to the winning cause. The Purple Riders were paced by Senior forward Bob Casteel who tallied 20 markers on 5 goals and 10 free throws. Junior guard Roger Lewis added 14 points. Leonard Cameron 2nd leading scorer on last year's Purple Rider squad, was held to 8 points He did snare 13 rebounds, however. The free-wheeling contest produced a total of 54 personal fouls, 28 on the Panthers. The winners outgoaled the hosts 23-15 for the margin of victory. The Riders are idle until December 4 when they visit Midvale. The Panthers take on Kidron Central Christian tonight at Kidron.
