65 - Down The Line With Dan Kopp

DOVER - Midvale, it appears, is  well on the way to having the most valuable player in  the Tuscarawas County Class A Basketball League again this season.  Dean DeMattio took outright honors in 1963 and shared the same distinction with Strasburg ace John Peters last year.  In the line for the laurels this time around is 6-3 standout Dan Kohler.  A Senior, Kohler leads the league in scoring with 93 points and has 277 all told.  He also is an outstanding rebounder.  If you like to look into the future, keep your eye on John Studer, flashy Strasburg Sophomore.  Standing 6-3, the talented Tiger has been impressive thus far, scoring 116 markers.  Fifty-six have come in 3 league tussles.  Although I haven't had the pleasue of seeing him play as yet this season, Dan Andreas of Garaway looked mighty tough the few times he performed before me last season.  He's just a Junior and reportedly has all the tools necessary to be a great one.  He stands 6-3.  A couple more Sophomores who should be valuable assets to New Philadelphia next season are John Bihari and Tim Baab who are 5-11 and 6-3, respectively.  Baah has tallied 96 points, including 29 last week in an overtime victory over Newcomerstown.  Bihari has 91 markers and has been in double figures 5 times.  NOTE:  Stone Creek will merge with New Philadelphia before the next school term.

Not being adverse to sticking my neck out on occasion, here are those cagers who appear to be in line for all-league laurels.  Keep in mind that in most instances I have to take the word of others who have seen these lads perform.

Garaway Pirates - Dan Andreas
Gnadenhutten Indians - Gene Bates and Terry Huebner
Midvale Blue Devils - Dan Kohler and Terry Leggett
Port Washigton Purple Riders - Leonard Cameron and Dan Gay
Stone Creek Panthers - Vic Turner
Strasburg Tigers - Tom Dreher, John Studer and Rock VanFossen
Tuscarawas Broncos - Rich Eckhardt and Russ McGlothlin
Tuscarawas Valley Trojans - Harold Swinford

Pete Hilliard of Midvale and Charles Huggins of Stone Creek are early choices for Coach of the Year honors.  Huggins took this title last season.

John Peters, ex-Strasburg High cage standout, is doing a fine job for the Varsity team at Otterbein College; although, just a Freshman.
