65 - Garaway Dumps Tusky Valley 56-44 (12-4-64)

Garaway's Dan Andreas (43) acts as a "nightclub bouncer" as he tries to get the ball fromTuscarawas Valley's Terry Hay.  Also in photo are Trojans Bob Burris (left), Gary Adams (22) and Harold Swinford.

Garaway's Terry Gerber (left) defends against Tuscarawas Valley's Joe Duebner who tries to work a fast break.

Going "up to the celling" for a rebound are Trojan Bob Burris (32) and Pirate Randy Miller.  At left is Garaway's Ron Raber.

BOLIVAR - Folley for Tuscarawas Valley (0-1) (0-1) was spelled out in the form of an effective full-court press employed by Garaway (1-0) (2-0).  It stood like an iron curtain that the Trojans seldom penetrated.  In a game decidedly lacking polish on either side of the scoreboard, Garaway's press was about the only impressive facet.  Garaway went into the press with only 1:15 elapsed in the initial period.  With few exceptions, the Pirates continued to apply the pressure throughout, befudding the Trojan offense and nabbing stray passes time and again.  In all, Tuscarawas Valley was charged with 29 turnovers, or loss of possession of the ball.  Had the Pirates been able to capitalize on the numerous opportunities handed them by TV, the game would have been turned into a complete rout.  Tusky Valley also used the press and at times gave the Pirates fits, turning the game into a fumble and tumble event.  Each team had a pair of players scoring in double figures.  Randy Miller paced the Pirates with 20 points, 10 of them in the 1st period.  Teammate Jim Young added 12.  Leading the Trojans were Bob Burris and Harold Swinford with 14 and 11 points, respectively.  Tuscarawas Valley, limited to 13 tries from  the field in the 1st half, had to lean heavily on its foul line accuracy and stayed in the game by bucketing 20 for 30 for 66.6 percent.  Staying within overtaking distance of Garaway, Tuscarawas Valley attempted to break the game open midway in the 2nd period when it went into a stall offense to spread Garaway's tightly-knit defense.  It netted the Trojans' lone goal of the period, but was otherwise ineffective as a scoring weapon.  With 2 minutes remaining before the half Garaway picked off 6 Trojan passes, turning them into goals by Young, Terry Gerber and Dex Sedwick, plus a pair of successful Sedwick free throws.  It gave Garaway a 32-18 halftime lead.  With the exception of a late third-period push that brought them within 39-29, TV never narrowed the count any lower.  Garaway ended the night with 20 of 65 field attempts for a sub-par 30.8 percent and connected on 16 of 30 from the foul line, a 53.3 percentage.  TV connected on 12 of 37 from the floor for an equally bad 32.4 percent.  The Tuscarawas Valley Reserves (1-0) whipped the Garaway Reserves (1-1) by a score of 47-29.
