65 - Stone Creek Brings Down Garaway 46-33 (12-12-64)

STONE CREEK - Charles Huggins may be made honorary mayor of here if the Panthers (5-1) continue their wining habits.  Stone Creek High hadn't had a winning season since 1958-59 when Huggins took over last year.  So what happened?  The Panthers proceeded to post a 14-8 slate and went to the finals of the Sectional Tournament before bowing 32-29 to Dennison, the best post-season work of any Panther quintet.  Apparently this season's squad wants additional glory, for the Panthers put a big feather in their collective hats here Saturday night by rapping a solid Garaway (3-2) combine.  Huggins, named Tuscarawas County Class A League Coach of the Year last season, was up to his favorite pasttime, employing control tactics and a tight defense.  And the Panthers followed his instructions to the letter, making 15 of 47 action shots for 32 percent and limiting the Pirates of Coach Glenn Bower to a mere 9 hits in 47 attempts for a frigid 19 percent.  From the foul lines, Stone Creek was 15 for 35 and Garaway 15 for 31.  Only one Panther reached double figures...John Flinner with 11 points.  But, oh what balance!  Dave Weber got 8, Vic Turner 7, Tim Baab and Jim Wherley 6 each, John Bihari 5 and John Feller 3.  Tops for Garaway was Dan Andreas who  found the range for 14.  Pirate Randy Miller led the way in the rebound department, battling for 10.  Turner grabbed 7.  The Panthers, not the least concerned with the usually effective Pirate press, led the entire way.  Stone Creek will host Baltic Friday.  Garaway greets Hiland the same night.  The Stone Creek Reserves (4-0) remained unbeaten by blasting the Garaway Reserves (2-2) 42-23.
