65 - Midvale Remains On Top After Squeezing Past Strasburg 68-66 (1-15-65)
Strasburg's Rock VanFossen is all alone as he battles Midvale's Tom Daniels (left) and Bob Carlisle for a rebound. Tigers Rick Hall (left) and Don Gerber watch.
MIDVALE - Strasburg (3-1) (6-3) made a gallant effort to knock off the high-riding Blue Devils (5-0) (13-0), but couldn't quite pull it off. After a see-saw battle all night, the Pete Shahan-coached Bengals forged to the front by 3 points with 2 minutes left. Blue Devil ace Dan Kohler then canned 2 of 3 charities, one try coming as a result of a technical foul called against Shahan. This tied the count. With time running out, the Tigers tried for the last shot. But, it went astray with 15 seconds left and Midvale's Bob Carlisle grabbed the all-important rebound and fired the ball to teammate Tom Daniels who came through with the bucket and the victory at :05. Terry Leggett of the Blue Devils captured game scoring laurels with 29 points, 10 more than the reliable Kohler. Strasburg got tremendous balance, but couldn't overcome the pressing Blue Devils. Sophomore sensation John Studer paced the tough Tigers with 20 points, followed by Ron Lab and Tom Dreher with 13 each and Rock VanFossen at 10. Both teams enjoyed fine nights shooting-wise. The Tigers sank 26 of 57 action attempts and 14 of 20 free throws. The Blue Devils canned 28 of 63 from the floor and 12 of 25 at the foul lines. Carolisle and Leggett both snared 7 rebounds, but game honors went to VanFossen who grabbed 9. Strasburg hosts West Holmes tonight. Midvale visits Freeport tonight to tangle with Lakeland. In the Reserve game, Strasburg (7-1) took game honors with a 42-39 win against Midvale (5-5).
