BERLIN - Those 2 neighborhood rivals, Garaway (4-2) and Hiland (4-2), were at each other's throats here again last night...on the basketball court. Played before a capacity audience, the game went down to the final seconds before Garaway captured a 52-46 decision. Tonight, Hiland renews another big basketball rivalry when perennial Wayne County power, Northwestern, invades. Although Garaway was in the driver's seat at the end of each period, leading 14-12, 24-22 and 37-32, it had to stave off a 3rd period rally by Hiland to secure the victory. Hiland went ahead in the 3rd and from that juncture the lead was up for grabs. Hiland went ahead in the 3rd and from that juncture the lead was up for grabs. With 1:36 remaining to play, Hiland was down 4 points. Garaway's Jim Young and Dex Sedwick tallied twice each from the charity line in the late seconds to put the Pirate triumph on ice. Dan Andreas, who pulled down 9 rebounds for the Pirates, led the victors with 24 points. Ron Raber contributed 11. Randy Miller gave a big helping hand on the boards when he grabbed 6 rebounds. Setting the scoring pace for Hiland were Ken Miller with 13 points, Ron Miller with 12 and John Hochstetler with 10. Garaway connected 15 times in 40 attempts from the field for 40 percent and added 22 points in 31 tries at the foul line. Hiland made 16 of 42 fielders for 38 percent,while hitting 14 of 17 foul shots. No mention of a Reserve game.
