65 - Strasburg Drops Garaway 71-69 In 2OT (1-22-65)

STRASBURG - Whew-ee!  It was anybody's ball game all the way, the best either team could do was a 6-point advantage.  And in the end it was Sophomore sensation John Studer who displayed the poise of a seasoned veteran as he calmly flipped in a corner shot with 2 seconds left in the 2nd overtime to give his Tiger mates the victory.  Garaway (4-1) (7-4) started fast, vaulting out to a 10-4 margin in the initial frame before the tough Tigers (4-1) (8-3) began pecking away to pull to within a point, 14-13, after 8 minutes.  The smooth-working Pirates continued in the driver's seat at the next 2 rests, 32-31 at the half and 52-50 going into the final frame of regulation play.  Strasburg led 42-36 halfway through the 3rd canto.  The Glenn Bower-coached Pirates enjoyed a 5-point spread on 2 occasions in the last stanza, but the Tigers refused to give up.  Down 64-59 with 3 minutes remaining, the Tigers of Coach Pete Shahan went to work.  Ron Lab and Studer sank deuces to cut the deficit to 64-63, but then Pirate Dan Andreas countered from the foul line to make it 65-63.  The slick-looking Studer proved his calmness with 27 seconds remaining, sinking a pair of charities to knot the count 65-all.  The touted Pirates immediately went into a decidedly deliberate offense, waiting until the final stages for one last try at the basket.  But, the strategy didn't pay off this time  as  Randy Miller's shot from the key hit the rim and bounced  off.  So, into overtime the 2 fine teams went.  Strasburg controlled the tip and Lab tossed in a pair of charities at 2:00 for a 67-65 advantage, but the talented Andreas drilled in a 2-pointer with 4 seconds remaining to delay the outcome once more.  In the second extra period, Tom Dreher moved his Tiger mates in front from the floor, but Pirate Dex Sedwick knotted things up seconds later.  Garaway regained possession and once again employed the control offense, working for one last shot.  But, Tiger Dick Gerber "tied up" Sedwick with 7 seconds left,  forcing a jump ball.  Gerber won the battle and Studer contolled the tip.  Passing off to a teammate and getting the ball back, the dead-eyed Studer split the nets with 3 seconds left on the clock and theTigers had another victory.  Studer ended as the Tigers' top point-maker, notching 20.  Dreher tossed in 18, Rock VanFossen 15 and Lab 14 before fouling  outin the 1st extra frame.  High for the heart-broken Pirates was Jim Young who took game honors with 27 tallies.  Randy Miller contributed 20 and Andreas 14.  Garaway lost Terry Gerber in the 1st overtime.  The Pirates outscored the Tigers from the floor, 29 to 28, but sank just 11 of 20 fouls to 15 of 27 for their hosts.  Garaway took 55 action attempts and Strasburg 42.  Both squads pulled in 35 rebounds.  Rick Hall topped the Tigers with 13 and Studer snared 12.   Andreas captured game laurels with 17 and Miller had 10 for Garaway.  Strasburg committed 15 turnovers and  Garaway 14.  The Strasburg Reserves (8-2) blow off the Garaway Reserves (6-3) 47-34.
