SUGARCREEK - Garaway (4-0) (7-2) and Stone Creek (3-2) (10-2) ended their regular season matchmaking at a 1-1 stalemate last night as the Pirates' Jim Young hit a fielder that proved to be the difference. With seconds remaining and Garaway ahead by a slim 41-40 margin, Young slithered through the Panther press and swished a lay-in to give the eventual victors a 3-point lead. It was all they needed, despite a final Stone Creek goal. Garaway, which had bowed 46-33 to Stone Creek on the Panther court December 12, led the entire 1st half. But, the Panthers came clawing back in the 3rd stanza and tied the game. Just before the period ended Garaway went on top 29-25. The lead was swapped numerous times in the finale before Garaway, in possession of the ball, moved into an 8-point lead with 2 minutes to play. Stone Creek switched to a press, employing it successfully to erase the Pirate margin and tie the score 40-40. That's when Young stepped into the firing line. Before hitting his final fielder he also counted a foul shot on the one-and-one. Randy Miller, who along with teammate Dan Andreas, continued to pace the Pirates' rebounding with 9 and 8, respectively, also led his team with 16 points. Young counted 12 and Andreas 11. Tim Baab topped Stone Creek scoring with 18 points, while John Flinner made 10. Garaway connnected 15 times in 43 field tries for 35 percent. Stone Creek had 18 for 42. The Pirates added 13 free throws in 24 attempts and the Panthers made 6 of 9. The Garaway Reserves (5-2) also barely got by the Stone Creek Reserves (7-1) 35-33 who lost their 1st game of the season.
