65 - Gnaden Slides By Port Washington 70-69 (1-16-65)

PORT WASHINGTON - While the host Purple Riders (1-4) (3-9) were experiencing difficulties in putting their offense into gear, Gnadenhutten's Indians (3-2) (5-8) took advantage to race to an 18-6 lead at the conclusion of the initial stanza.  It was enough to plut Port Washington so far in the hole thast  it never completely recovered.  Despite outgoaling the invaders 28-21 and making an 11th hour dash, the Riders bowed.  Gnaden unleased a potent 3-man scoring punch, spearheaded by Gary Rice who tallied 20 points.  Dan Jinks and Terry Huebner followed with 17 and 13, respectively.  The Tribe more than made up the goal difference at the free throw line when it made 28 of 34.  Leonard Cameron came through with his best scoring performance of the campaign when he tossed in 27 markers for the Riders.  Teammate Dan Gay, who fouled out with 3 minutes remaining to play, added 18.  With 29 seconds left, Port was down 67-65.  Gnaden's Gene Bates made a pair of foul shots to boost the Indian lead to 4 points before Cameron retaliated on  a fielder.  Rice; however, added a foul shot for Gnadenhutten, making the score 70-67.  Just as the final buzzer sounded, Rider Bob Casteel was fouled.  He swished a pair of free throws.  Port Washington, which made 13 of 24 foul shots, ended the night with a 40 percent mark from the field.  Cameron led the rebounding department, grabbing 12 of the Riders' 39 total.  The Port Washington Reservers (2-5) came through with a 40-36 win over the Gnadenhutten Reserves (4-7).
