65 - Hiland Drops Strasburg 85-77 (1-26-65)

STRASBURG - Hiland (13-3) gained a lot of prestige here last night via a victory over touted Strasburg (8-5).  The talented Hawks pushed their slate with the decision, far better than was expected at the outset of the season.  Both teams fought furiously, with Pete Shahan's Tigers holding 18-16 and 42-38 margins at the first 2 stops before Bob Schrock's Hawks tied the count 60-60 going into the deciding final frame.  Key to the win was Hiland's amazing shooting ability.  Strasburg also enjoyed a fabulous night shootingwise, canning 30 action attempts in 60 tries for a glittering 50 percent.  But, the Hawks went 11 points better, sinking 25 of 57 from the floor for a blistering 61 percent.  And they missed just 8 shots the entire 2nd half!  Most of their attempts came from around the key.  The packed house saw the game see-saw back and forth most of the night, the score changing hands 5 times in the 1st canto, 8 in the 2nd, 9 in the 3rd and 3 in the fourth.  Strasburg's best advantage was 32-26 and Hiland's best was 83-72.  Rock VanFossen, one of the most steady players in the county, gave Strasburg new life when he popped in a pair of fouls after the 3rd quarter buzzer sounded to knot the count.  Teammate Ron Lab put the Tigers 2 up in the final frame from the foul line, but Jim Edwards pulled Hiland even on a goal, Don Yutzy sank a 2-pointer and Art Miller and Ken Miller sank fouls before VanFossen countered twice on charities.  From then on it was mostly Hiland.  At the charity stripes, Hiland went 15 for 21 and Strasburg 17 for 32.  Rebounds favored Strasburg 42-40, with Rick Hall snaring 12, VanFossen 10 and John Studer 7.  Ken Miller grabbed 17 and John Hochstetler 10 for Hiland.  The Hawks committed 27 turnovers and the Tigers 15.  Ken Miller paced the Hawk scoring parade, notching 20 points.  Hochstetler mustered 19 and Yutzy 18.  High point-maker for Strasburg was VanFossen who garnered 22.  Studer and Tom Dreher both added 12 and Lab and Hall contributed 10 apiece.  Strasburg hosts Stone Creek Friday.  Hiland greets Garaway Saturday.  The Strasburg Reserves (9-3) blasted the Hiland Reserves 65-48.
