PORT WASHINGTON - A welcome Christmas gift was bestowed on the team and fans of Port Washington here last night as the Purple Riders (1-7) broke a 7-game losing streak for this season and a 16 game losing streak dating back to last season, by nipping Roscoe 64-60. Coach Tom Davies' chargers hope to add another present tonight when they move to Malvern for a game postponed because of snow several weeks ago. Taking a night off from county league play, Port moved from an 8-point deficit at halftime to the hard-earned victory with John Landon potting the ultimate winning bucket late in the last stanza. Port moved from the 35-27 deficit at halftime to a 52-47 advantage in the third quarter with Bill Phillips pacing the attack with help from John Landon and Jim Hannahs. Bill Phillips finished with scoring laurels on 20, while Jim Hannahs canned 12 and John Landon 11. The Port Washington Reserves (2-6) started the sweep earlier with a 56-35 win over the Roscoe Reserves.
