61 - Garaway's Fast Break Stops Tuscarawas 75-61 (2-23-61)
PHOTO: First year Coach Glen Bower graduated from Ohio University. The 29-year-old Bower, who played his high school football and basketball at Dover High, has stressed defense, a somewhat lost art in this hectic basketball era of run and shoot, then run and shoot some more. It has paid off with an 18-4 record for the Pirates. But Bower has not completely eliminated the fast break. He goes on the theory that if the opportunity arises his team will make the big break, and it did in Thursday night's semi-final game against Tuscarawas. In that game the "run 'em, shoot 'em" style broke the Broncos' back.

DENNISON - A halftime defensive adjustment and a "bang up job by our kids on the boards," were cited by Garaway Coach Glen Bower as the main reasons for the Pirates (18-4) fired up second half performance. As another person put it, "The Pirates just played basketball like they know how to play it." in the second half as compared to the first half performance. The hot-shooting antics of pint-sized guard Bud Yakley certainly didn't deter the Pirates in their bid for a second staight championship berth. Yakley kept the Bucs in the game with his deadeye set shot in the first half when he scored 12 of their 28 points. He ended the night with 21. In the second half the spark carried to the remainder of the squad and Bob Raber, who hit 11 points in the big third period rally, tied for team laurels by ending with 21 points. Tom Andreas followed with 13 and Jarret Gray connected for 11. "The kids just moved better and we got something of a fast break going in the second half," Bower remarked. From the Tuscarawas dressing room Coach Aaron Miller echoed those sentiments. He had seen his charges caught flat-footed time and again by the fast-breaking Pirates. But more than that the Pirates completely dominated the backboards and most of the time limited the Broncos (13-7) to one shot on the offensive before clearing the boards. Garaway also dominated its offensive boards and in all took 94 shots. "We didn't get back in time to stop their fast break. They have a real fine fast break and a good team," Miller said. "I don't have any alibis, but I think our foul shooting hurt us and the fact that we couldn't keep them playing our game. We had to play their brand of ball," he concluded. The Broncos made 13 of 27 free throws. Tuscarawas dispayed balanced fire power with 4 starters hitting the double figure column. Phil Meese, the Broncos fiery little front man, tallied 21 points, while Chet Summers followed with 11 and Ben Metzger and Terry Rainsberg connected for 10 apiece. The Broncos maneuvered to a 12-8 lead midway in the first period and maintained the pace to lead 18-13 at halftime. They were on top 29-24 with the half fast drawing to a close when consecutive goals by Bud Yakley and Raber closed the gap to one point at the pause. Garaway vaulted into the lead for keeps at the outset of the second quarter as Raber hit on a tip, and Yakey meshed a jumper and an easy layup shot at the tail end of a fast break. The Pirates outscored Tusky 24-10 to enter the final quarter with a comfortable 52-39 lead. The Pirates meshed 30 of 94 field attempts for 31.9 percent and made 15 of 26 free throws. Tusky made 24 of 61 for 38.1 percent.
