DENNISON - Garaway (20-4) "walked" to its second straight District Tournament trip last night in the co-championship finals of the Dennison Class "A" Sectional Tournament. Executing the "Muskingum Stall" to perfection, the Pirates scalped the Gnadenhutten Indians (13-9), the fourth time they accomplished the feat this season. The Bucs now have until next Wednesday to prepare for their District encounter. They will meet either Stanton Local (19-0) or Springfield Township (15-5).
In the past 10 years the Muskingum stall, said to have been originated by former Muskie baskeball Coach Mac Merriner, and its variations, have been seen quite frequently in county cage circles. It has proven to be more than a stall---in many instances an effective offense. And it was to that end Garaway used it last night. "That stall really worked to perfection tonight," Garaway Coach Glenn Bower exclaimed. "I just hope the kids can come through in the District, now. I'll tell you one thing," he said, "It'll be a pleasure to play a different team." "Gnadenhutten has a real good squad, but this ought to prove we've got a good bunch of boys also." In 4 games this season with Gnadenhutten, Garaway has fought from behind to win on each occasion. Last night's final 1960-1961 meeting between the 2 teams followed much the same pattern as did their Tuscarawas County League Tournament Championship duel, except it was not won in the final seconds.
Garaway led only once in the first half, that by 1-0 at the outset. It regained the lead for the first time in the game at 42-41 with 5:31 remaining in the third quarter when Tom Andreas hit a jump shot. Battling nip-and-tuck, the Pirates and Indians ended the quarter in a 49-49 deadlock. At the beginning of the final period Garaway opened a 5 point lead, one it never relinquished. With 5:21 remaining and on top 58-55 in the game Bower called time. And from that point the Bucs stealthily maneuvered through the stall. It left the Gnaden defense wide open and the Pirates racked up some quick and easy lay in shots to gain an insurmountable lead. In the final 4 minutes of play they outscored Gnaden 12-2. Andreas and Bob Raber of theBucs were the mighty stalwarts in the final drive. Both played with four personal fouls. Raber picked his up with 6:31 to play and Andreas with 4:17 to go.
The latter paced the victory with 24 points, while Raber tallied 22. Roy Yoder added a big 11 points. Four Indians scored in double figures with Bob Ervin's 18 points leading the way. Brad Kaiser hit 15 and Bill Blickensderfer 12 apiece. "We played a good game, but I have to give credit to Garaway, it has a darn good team," Ron Sakola of Gnaden said. " I wish them a lot of luck in the District." Garaway cashed in on 27 of 72 goal tries for 37.5 percent and added 18 free throws in 25 tries. In concluding its season, Gnaden was limited to 49 field attempts, making 21 for 42.8 percent. The Indians connected on 18 of 26 foul shots.
