61 - Gnaden Protests 5-4 Loss To Baltic (4-19-61)

BALTIC - Baltic (3-0) continued among the ranks of the undefeated in the Tuscarawas County Class "A" Baseball League yesterday afternoon when it rang up its third straight win by nipping Fall baseball champion Gnadenhutten (1-1).  Gnadenhutten Coach Ted Martin announced that the game was being played under protest.  The protest came as the result of Baltic's 7th-inning run which provided the victory margin.  Dick Gerber led off the inning with a triple and Willis Mullet received an intentional walk, putting runners on first and third, with 2 out.  Gnadenhutten then began to issue another intentional pass to Larry Lautenschleger when Indian catcher Gary Dichler stepped from the catcher's box before hurler Tom Rausi delivered.  A balk was called, permitting Gerber to score and giving the Eagles the verdict.  Lautenschleger (3-0) went the distance for the Eagles, limiting the Indians to 4 hits.  A total of 7 errors were committed by the Eagles, including 4 in the 7th frame when Gnaden scored 3 runs, bolstered by Gary Conaway's single.  The Baltic hurler fanned 8 and walked only one.  Conaway (1-1) started for Gnadenhutten and toiled for 6 innings before being relieved by Rauzi (0-0).  They were touched for 7 hits, walked 4 and struck out 7.  Jim McCreary had a double for the tribe.
