DOVER - You won't find tremendous size in the quanity that most coaches would prefer on an all-star squad, but for all-around speed, scoring ability and defensive prowess, it would be difficult to match the 1960-1961 Daily Reporter Class "A" League All-County Basketball armada. But the over-all height of this year's squad makes it look like a "valley of giants" when compared with last season's spectacular aggregation which had only one man above the 6 foot mark. The tallest man on the current squad is 6-3, 4 others are 6-2 and 2 more just hit the 6-foot level. Because so many performers played key roles in the success of their respective teams during a gruelling league campaign, a dozen players have been named to the current all-star edition. Garaway and Tuscarawas Valley, who shared the league championship with 7-1 records, and Port Washington dominate this year's selections with 2 members each. Tuscarawas, Strasburg, Midvale, Stone Creek, Baltic and Gnadenhutten each placed one man. All players are Seniors with the exception of Jim Clymer and Neal Beans, both of whom have another year of eligibility remaining. Ron Lake and Jim Bender are repeaters from last year's squad, while Bill Phillips returns to the star squad which he made as a sophomore in the 1958-1959 season. As a unit, the "star" squad tallied 3,562 points during the regular season activity - an average of 297 points each. That figure alone, would lighten the burden of any scholastic cage coach.
Gale Sauser although not exactly a tall man by modern standards had no equal in either county Class "A" or Class "AA" ranks when it came to scoring. He paced the scoring parade with 425 points for a 21.3 game average. The Stone Creek ace tallied 221 a year ago. Larry Lautenschleger, who played in the shaddows of John Rice and Gary Gerber during the past 2 seasons at Baltic, blossomed forth as a scoring ace in his own right this season. The 6-foot Senior dumped in 386 points for the Eagles, almost doubling his 139-point output in the 1959-60 campaign. Bender and Phillips gave Port Washington a strong scoring punch. Bender finished a 3-year varsity career, improving in each season. He caged 125 points as a sophomore, 318 last year, and 340 during the recent regular season. Phillips, a hardcourt pakage of dynamite at 5-6 who set county nets on fire as a Sophomorfe with 393 points, made a strong comeback this year after almost completely losing the range last year. He finished with 306 points this year to hoist a 3 year total to 821. Bob Raber was the only other league performer to finish over the 300-point mark meshing 323 as he and Tom Andreas spearheaded Garaway to another tremendous season endeavor. Tusky Valley's Jim Studer and Lake did not make offensive splashes as did some of their cohorts, but defensively, they were second to none. Along with Raber and Andreas, and Midvale's Neal Beans, you have a defensive-quintet that wold prove a rough customer. Beans is regarded as one of the smartest floormen in the county. His moves border on the cautious side-but they've usually been the right ones. Clymer was a standout performer throughout the entire season despite the fact that Strasburg collected only an opening-game win in 18 starts. He finished with 259 points. Ray Rank and Chet Summers also stood out for their respective teams. Rank caged 221 points, and Summers hit for 183. The latter recently finished among the top 5 percent in a state scholarship examination. The 1960-1961 season is over. This basketball "dozen" has set a rough course for others to follow in the future.
