PORT WASHINGTON - With 8 lettermen in the fold, Port Washington will open its 1961 baseball campaign in early April. Coach Dick King said his Purple Riders will move into league play next week, weather permitting. In addition, Port will continue its track program which got underway there only a couple of years back with an abbreviated squad expected to perform in limited meets. Jim Bender and Larry Laisure will head up the port mound staff with both also moving into centerfield when not on the hill. Other returning lettermen include Al Fillman, catcher; Gary Gay, 3rd base; Jim Hannahs, 1st base; Tom Loader, shortstop; Tony Nigro, right field; and Bill Phillips, 2nd base.
Bender, Gay, Loader and Phillips also lettered in track last year and will form the nucleus for this year's squad. Bender and Phillips are dashmen, while Gay runs the half-mile and Loader is a distance man and hurdler.
