PORT WASHINGTON - Mrs. Janis D. Thomas has been employed as vocational home economics teacher in Salem-Port Washington schools, and George R. Thomas has been hired as 8th Grade teacher, assistant basketball coach and head track mentor.  Both Marshall College graduates, they were hired by the  Board of Education Monday night.  The board also added third year Spanish to the high school program of studies, tentatively approved mechanical drawing as a separate course and extended American Government & Problems of Democracy from a semester to a full-year course.  Applications are being taken for the position of school secretary for the 1961-1962 term.  Applicants must reside in the school district and file applications by noon, August 21.

In other business Monday night, the board accepted Borden Dairy Co.'s bid to furnish milk and ice cream needs for cafeterias this year, and awarded Ladrach Tire and Sales a bid to supply school bus tire needs during the term.  Old auditorium seats have been made available to school district residents.  They may be picked up gratis on a first-come basis until August 15.  New darkening drapes have been installed in all new elementary rooms, physics and chemistry laboratory, and biology and general science room at Port Washington.  Half of the total cost was derived from funds received under Title III, National Defense Education Act.  Plans are underway to  purchase the same type drapes, under the same program, for the Washington Township School in the near future.  The board recently approved the purchase of 2 new woodworking tables and a woodworking lathe, and the installation of a new tile floor in the new sewing room.
