63 - Newcomerstown Downs Stone Creek In Opener 55-33 (11-30-62)

STONE CREEK - Taking a page from the football history book, the Newcomerstown basketball team opened the new season on a triumphant note for the first time in 10 years here Friday with a win over Stone Creek (0-3).  The win marked a successful debut for Coach John Haugh former Uhrichsville cage ace who took over this year at Newcomerstown (1-0).  While only one letterman is back from last year, the Trojans led all the way, posting 12-4, 20-15 and 38-23 advantages.  The lone returnee, Dave Williams paced the Trojans with 16 points.  Tom Sieber, 6-2 center, had 12 points and did commendable work on the boards.  No one was in double figures for Stone Creek as Coach Ken Lawhun emptied the bench in an effort to find a winning combination."We're far from being sharp," Haugh said, "but considering it was our first game there were some encouraging aspects."  The Stone Creek Reserves (2-1) nipped the Newcomerstown Reserves (0-1) 26-25.
