63 - Port Rocks Stone Creek 57-47 In Opener For Both Teams (11-16-62)

PORT WASHINGTON - The 1962-1963 basketball season officially got underway in Tuscarawas County here Friday night with the Port Washington Purple Riders (1-0) coming on strong in the second half to defeat Stone Creek (0-1).  The Riders of Coach Don Durham trailed the Panthers 23-21 at the halfway point, but outscored them 19 to 7 in the 3rd to take a 40-30 lead into the final stanza.  Ken Gay, who came in as a sub in the 1st period, led the Riders with 18 points, 10 of which came  in the crucial  third stanza.  Wayne Blind had 10 points.  Cliff Endlich led coach Ken Lawhun's crew with 12 points and Mel McAfee flipped in 10.  Earlier in the night, the Stone Creek Reserves (1-0) beat back the Port Washington Reserves (0-1) 30-23.
