63 - Garaway Handles Baltic 68-40 In Opener For Both Clubs (11-19-62)
SUGARCREEK - The debut of the 1962-1963 Garaway basketball team and new coach were successful here Saturday night as the Pirates (1-0) turned back Baltic (0-1). Coach Joe Richards, having moved into the Sugarcreek-Shanesville area after a successful stint at Flushing, guided the Pirates to the easy victory. Garaway took a 15-5 first quarter lead and coasted. Don Deetz and Geof Stevanus, the only "veterans" back from last year led the onslaught with 26 and 15 points respectively, while the lone returning regular for Baltic, Dick Gerber, led the Eagles with 22 markers. The Pirates will return to action Wednesday at Stone Creek, while Baltic will host Adamsville Saturday night. The Garaway Reserves (1-0) picked up their 1st victory of the year by mauling the Baltic Reserves (1-0) 42-18.
