62 - Port Washington Honors Athletes (5-18-62)

PORT WASHINGTON - Juniors Tom Loader, Paul Schwab and Larry Laisure were named the most improved basketball players at the Annual Port Washington Athletic Banquet last night.  Approximately 125 persons attended the fete.  This was the first time in the school's history that more than one boy was named most-improved.  Others receiving top honors were Steve Bender, Junior Varsity foul shooting and Alvin Fillman, best foul shooting on the Varsity.  Fillman and Tony Nigro, the only two Seniors on the Port combine, received Senior trophies.  Also getting trophies were cheerleaders Myrna Landon and Janet Gray, both Seniors.

Guest speaker for the evening was Bob Schrock, Head Coach at Hiland High School who piloted his Hawks to the State finals this past season before bowing to champion Dixie.  Schrock talked on  his activities at Hiland, the training rules he enforces there and how he goes about organizing the best team he can.  He stressed building character rather than teaching his boys that winning is the most important thing.  It is not beyond the reach of any one to reach the State finals, he said.  "We didn't play each game for the sake of winning alone, but to do the best we could."
