DOVER - Lack of height and only 2 returning lettermen are the problems Coach Pete Hilliard of Midvale will have to overcome this season.  The Blue Devil basketballers were heavily hit through graduation, losing outstanding players Neal Beans and Rick Belknap plus Walt Weaver, Mike Page and Jim Tidrick.  The  only veterans back in the fold this year are Bob Byers, 5-10 Senior and Dean DeMattio, 6-2 Junior.  Others seeking varsity berths are the following:

Senior Don Bassquin 5-10
Senior Tom Mackey 5-8
Junior Tom McPherson 5-9
Junior Don Ickes 5-10
Junior Butch Fox 5-5
Junior Jay Carpenter 5-10
Sophomore Terry Leggett 5-8
Sophomore Tom Daniels 5-10
Sophomore Ted Tolloti 5-7
Sophomore Dan Kohler 6-0

Hilliard, now in his 9th year at the helm, guided his cagers to an 18-5 record last year, including a co-championship of the Tuscarawas County League and all the honors in the county tournament.  The 1961-1962 Devils bowed out 54-48 to Dennison in the second game of the Sectional.  Byers and DeMattio apparently have starting berths sewed up,  but Hilliard is undecided about the other 3 spots.  Top candidates at this time are Basquin, Mackey, McPherson, Ickes and Fox.  Byers potted 175 points last year and DeMattio 151.  Hilliard has posted an 82-26 won-loss record during the past 5 years.
