62 - Gnadenhutten Trips Garaway 6-5 For County Tournament Title (4-26-62)

SUGARCREEK - Gnadenhutten High School's Indians (7-0) reign as Champions of the County Baseball Tournament today by virtue of their triumph over host Garaway (3-3).  The Indians tallied their winning run in the top of the final inning with 2 outs.  Gnaden broke out on top in the first frame as Glenn Miller doubled and rode home on a clean single by Dick Shull.  Shull then scored on an error.  Bill Davis started the second frame off with a single for the charges of Coach Ted Martin, was sacrified to second by Don Garrett and came romping across the plate on Shull's second run-scoring single of the game.  Again Shull scored on an error.  Garaway picked up 2 unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh on an error, a hit batsman and a long throwing error which allowed both runners to  score.  This made  it 4-2 Gnaden.  Three Tribe errors in the top of the bottom of the third inning filled the sacks and a triple by pitcher Dan Bleininger cleaned the bases.  This put the Pirates ahead 5-4.  The Indians tied it up in the sixth.  Garret singled, but was forced at second by Miller.  Miller then stole second and came home on a single by starting pitcher Jim McCreary. The winning tally came as Garret singled with 2 out and Miller lined a double to left field on the hit and run.  Garret coming all the way home.  McCreary (1-0) went 2 innings before control trouble forced Martin to go with Dave Struchen (5-0).  The pair combined for 9 strikeouts and 5 walks, while giving up 4 hits.  Bleininger (2-2) was touched for 9 hits, had 8 strikeouts and walked 5.  Miller had 2 hits, both doubles.  All  other Indians hits were singles.  The Tribe committed 7 errors.
