Six county high school basketball games are on tap Friday night with four of the teams making their debuts. They are Strasburg, Midvale, Port Washington and Stone Creek. Strasburg will entertain Dalton, Midvale will be host to Augusta, Port Washington takes on Gnadenhutten and Stone Creek meets Fresno. In two other contests the Sugarcreek Pirates of Coach Jim Stull will attempt to stretch their victory skein to three at Berlin. The Baltic Eagles of Jim Bellville also will be after their third win against one loss. Strasburg has ony three lettermen to bolster this season's hopes for another county championship. They are senior center Chuck Burris, a 6 footer; senior George Gessner 5'4, and junior Nick Haswell, 5'10. Three other seniors are fighting for starting berths - Bob Haswell 5'6, Joe Krantz 5'10 and Don Tracy 6'1. Juniors are Bill Dreher 5'10, Bob Jenel and Don Warnes both 5'9. Nine sophomores out for the squad are Charles Duff, Herb Garber, Don Grove, Walter Krantz, Dale Liggett, Kenneth Lewis, William Seese, and Frank and Larry Wallick. Four freshmen include 6'2 James Davis, tallest man on the team, Ray Deibel, Tommy Jones and Jeff Miles. Midvale has only three lettermen from last year's squad and will have to find replacements for two high point-getters in Dick Leggett and John Columbo, who graduated. Coach Pete Hillard is building this year's edition of the Blue Devils around a senior center Russ Hobart, who is 6'2 and Dave Belknap and Tom Krocker, 5'10 juniors. Others making bids for starting positions include juniors Don Hanlong 6', Jim Clark 5'10, Bill Housel 6'2 and Gary Carrothers 5'8. Sophomore candidates are Vince Denol, John Everett, Ted Hykes, Ron Breniser, Glen Byers, Jim Bielski, Larry Hodkinson, Dale Stansburg, Steve Reiser, Bob Rennicker, Ron Kaderly and Dick Housel. The Stone Creek Panthers will not only be hampered by a lack of height, but also experience as Coach "Ed McGlumphy has only two veterans returning. Rod Reinhart, a 5'10 senior, has lettered three years, while Harold Baker, 6'1 senior lettered for the first time last season. Other candidates are seniors Earl Flinnor 5'11, Richard Hanks 5'8 and Bob Willis 5'10 and juniors Harold Lahmers 6', Jim McAfee 5'7, Paul Patrick 5'10, Terry Sauser 5'9 and Dan Wherley 5'9. Also working out with the squad are Merle Degan, sophomore, and Larry Stepen, freshman. Port Washington has a new coach in Bill Oppenhimer, native of Portsmouth and former Ohio University athlete. He has only two lettermen returning in Don Ferrell and Ron Phillips. Others bidding for varsity berths include LeRoy Davies, Tom Gardner, Keith Heston, Larry Hagan, John Landon, Don Jones, Terry Urban and Bill Phillips.
