TUSCARAWAS County was well represented on college and university football teams throughout Ohio last season. But as we thumbed through the various basketball college pamphlets the other day we found the county also has many representatives on the collegiate courts. Joe Demares, a stalwart for the Dover Tornadoes last year until he reinjured his knee, appears to be back in top condition this season and is playing for Muskingum at New Concord. Joe is listed as a forward at 6-0 and the Muskie Information pamphlet states that "He has the heart and desire, but needs polish." Also on the Muskie roster is Ed Bates, who played quite a bit of basketball for Port Washington last season. Ed is holder of the Memorial Hall and Tuscarawas County tournament scoring record, meshing 50 points in last spring's meet.. He was a member of the Daily Reporter's All-County team. He too, is a freshman and is 6-2. Two former county cagers are playing with Heidelberg's Student Princes at Tiffin. They are Gene Wenger of New Philadelphia and Ron Deibel of Stone Creek. Wenger is listed as a 6-2 guard who is regarded as "one of Coach Marvin Frey's top sophomore prospects. Possessive of much basketball know-how, he was the leading frosh scorer last year." Deibel, another Daily Reporter All-County choice last season, is one of five freshman guards on the varsity squad. The Student Prince drumbeater says: Ron is a highly regarded freshman prospect, who played outstanding ball at Stone Creek High School. Another all-county choice last Spring was 6-2 Ken (Bobo) Hauter who now is a forward for the highly-regarded Kent State University Freshman team. Ken played his high school basketball at Tuscarawas Valley. Also on the Kent squad is Charley Boykin who played a lot of basketball for Kent Roosevelt last season. Terry Deems, of Tuscarawas, a member of the Daily Reporter elite group in the 1955 season, and Eldon Miller of Gnadenhutten, who was on last year's team, are on the Wittenburg College team. Deems is a 6-4 center, while Miller is playing guard.
