Port Washington's Purple Riders will be under the direction of a new coach when they launch their basketball schedule November 22 against the Gnadenhutten Indians on the Riders hardwood. Bill Oppenheimer, a native of Portsmouth and a former Ohio University athlete, has succeeded Jim Pfeiffer at the helm of the Purple Riders. Pfeiffer, the Port Washington music director, coached the Riders cagers last season on a temporary basis. The new mentor is single and 22 years of age. At Portsmouth, he played three years of basketball and baseball with the Trojans and was on the football and track teams two years. He also was a member of an American Legion baseball team three years. His high school cage coach was Bill Hohr who later went to Miami University and is now head basketball coach at Northwestern. One year of football was under the tutelage of Bill Hess, now an assistant at Ohio State. At Ohio University, he played three years of basketball and two years of baseball while majoring in health, physical education and recreation. The Port Washington post will be Oppenheimer's first venture into the coaching profession. Only two lettermen are back from last year's squad which won 13 of 22 games including tourney play. They are Don Ferrell and Ron Phillips. Others expected to grab varsity berths include LeRoy Davies, Tom Gardner, Larry Hagen, Keith Heston, Don Jones, John Landon, Bill Phillips and Terry Urban.
